An American military tribunal at Frankfurt sentenced five Germans to death by hanging for the murder of seven captured American airmen in the Borkum island death march. Executions will be at Ludwigsburg. One German received a life term, one was acquitted, and eight others were given prison sentences totaling 91 years.
Special to The News Zanesville Ohio. Orville Smith 50 of Columbus believed to be in the Muskingum river after a fishing accident Saturday afternoon near the Ellis dam. Sidney Jackson survived clinging to a capsized boat while Philip Weisbacher 38 aided from shore. Deputies searched the river as two men were reported drowned.
Coshocton residents are invited to the Ohio Power Company office Monday at 7 30 p m for the Coshocton Junior Chamber of Commerce meeting. State officers and visiting members aid in organizing and electing officers for the coming year as the group grows its charter and plans activities affiliated with the Ohio National Junior Chamber of Commerce.
San Quentin prison officials uncovered a 90 proof cough remedy being delivered with milk by Earl Young, 36, a milkman. He was fired by his dairy but no charges were filed. future milk deliveries will be non alcoholized, according to Warden Clinton Duffy.
Otto J. Zoll, 54, Baltimore, Md., was struck by a dark car on Walnut Street around 9 20 p m Saturday night and taken to City Hospital for observation. Zoll, an employee of Shaw Barton, lived at 928 Walnut and was crossing the street when hit. The car fled. no further description was obtained. A laceration over an eye was the only injury noted.
City detectives said a $3,000 cache of jewelry found in a locker at the union depot was returned to authorities in Richmond Indiana. Lee Raymond Jr 22 of Columbus was taken to Richmond after waiving extradition in Columbus municipal court over a $85,000 jewelry robbery case. Detectives located the jewelry after finding a locker key in Raymonds possession.
Funeral services scheduled for Benjamin Gerber 35 and Nathaniel John Skarin 23 both victims of a refinery explosion at the Pure Oil Heath refinery in Newark. Gerber to be remembered locally. Skarin to be buried in Lemont.
In Memphis a 17 year old Vernon Starks of Dallas opened fire with two handguns in a downtown furniture store. Police returned fire and wounded him in the hip before he surrendered. In nearby Ager Mrs Flossie Nicholas 16 died from burns suffered while using gasoline at a cleaner.
Dr Marcel Petint, accused of running a murder clinic in Paris during the occupation, claims he worked for a legitimate resistance group. Police inspector Baseau says 90 Spaniards knew nothing of him. spectators jeer as Petint asserts his loyalty to Gonzalez and patriots.
Police arrested a Black man identified as William Francisco Evans for a wave of home burglaries in Kansas City. The 31-year offender claimed to favor upper floors in breaks and confessed to spending most of his 31 years behind bars. He was at a property appealing a recent sentence for mistreating a woman when taken into custody.
City council faces a calmer session with both power purchase questions and land acquisitions on the agenda. Councilmen will vote on a motion to let the service director proceed with the original ordinance while discussing two ground plots behind waterworks and city hospital for future expansion.
