19-Year-Old Ohio Boy Becomes Navy’s Youngest Lt Commander Hero at Home
Robert Angers a 19 year old merchant seaman from Burton Ohio was hailed as one of the Navy's youngest lieutenant commanders after being mistaken for a naval officer by his hometown. He said a fall overboard led to hospital care and a joke from friends who wrote he was promoted. He bought a lieutenant commander uniform and planned to confess on reaching Burton but crowds grew and he signed onto another ship to escape. FBI arrested him as he stepped from the Liberty ship John Jay after Navy officials noted there were no 18 year old lieutenant commanders at that rank.
