HINERS' SIDE OF IT ON ANTHRACITE PAY AND OUTPUT
Philadelphia reporting President Mitchell presents a defense of the anthracite strike stance. He counters John Baer claim that wages are fair by arguing bituminous pay is 20 to 40 percent higher, and miners face longer hours and higher injury risk. Mitchell disputes output loss claims and stresses broader stakes for workers and families. He notes Reading Co. gains and overall 1901 coal output. Public petitions urge President Roosevelt to use good offices to end the strike. Troop movements and continued idle mines are described with emphasis on workers and community impact.
