Mrs. Mary Manning Sparling is safe aboard the steamer Conestoga traveling from Cleveland to Duluth with her husband Captain Gus Sparling. Her family feared she was lost after two Duluth-sail vessels sank in a storm, but a recent letter confirms she weathered the storm and reached Cleveland unharmed.
Miners from the Cassingham mines meet with Coshac ton Coal Company managers at Labor Hall tonight amid hints of important outcomes. In Cooperdale the Washington township school board debates funding a new school house and may send the matter to circuit court. Dr J E Foster visits Baltic on business and J A Jennings travels to Van Wert to settle affairs of the late T M Board. Senator John H Mitchell’s Oregon land fraud case leads to conviction for taking a $2600 bribe in the general land office. Mitchell, a long-time public figure from Pennsylvania to Oregon, served in the U S Senate beginning in 1872 and was reelected in 1880 and 1886.
Judge Eason will decide the Taggart divorce case on Saturday September 23 though the date has not yet been officially announced. Attorneys for Captain and Mrs. Taggart were informed that the verdict will be ready on Saturday morning.
Manager Porter plans a Christmas holiday tour for the Soshocton High School basketball team as local and external teams issue challenges. The football game against Mereath of Zanesville is set for Saturday at Riverside Park with a double schedule due to a concurrent baseball game between Fountains and Danville Virginia.
Two trains wrecked today. In Charleston West Virginia an express train was wrecked at Carkin and an express messenger was killed. The engineer and fireman were badly hurt. In Wallon Kansas the California Flyer wrecked near here, the baggage car diner and sleeper overturned and the diner cook fatally injured with several passengers hurt. Caracas Venezuela government replies to protests over French Cable company station closure and manager expulsion. Springfield Illinois John Mitchell replies on Chicago and Alton coal mine shot firing dispute and miners’ appeal.
Governor Myron T. Herrick told the Clarenton hotel crowd there is only one path for Democrats to carry the election by winning Republican votes. He claimed Republicans must avoid deception as the tide turns in favor. Herrick arrived with State Auditor Guilbert and planned to speak at Summerfield homecoming before returning to Columbus.
A large missionary event is planned in a grove near Chili next Thursday September 28 to commemorate the twenty fifth anniversary of the German Evangelical church building. Rev Haefle of Cleveland will headline sermons with multiple choirs performing. A noon picnic dinner prepared by church ladies will be served and open to all visitors.
City officials deny claims that stagnant water in dead ends causes typhoid fever. They state mains are flushed regularly, often biweekly, and that many cited streets are not on dead ends. No danger of contaminated city water exists.
Samuel Weil and three packing firm officials pleaded guilty to indictments charging rebates conspiracies. Weil faced a $10,000 fine while B S Cussey Vance Skipworth and Chess Todd were fined $5,000 each.
Richmond Ind Sept 21 The Carnegie library at Portland ind closed yesterday due to insufficient funds and it is probable Carnegie will be asked to reclaim the library built with his 15000 gift.

Lancaster defeats Columbus with second best Heinie Berger on mound and Compton's pitching limited to two hits. Anderson, Zanesville manager, watched lucratively as Lancaster contemplates continuing team after strong performance.
Sacramento September 21 The band of the Second Regiment National Guard of California will be mustered out for refusing to parade on Memorial Day in the city after the G A F ladies hired a nonunion drum corps. Authorities say band members disobeyed orders and Governor Pardee acting commander in chief will order their dismissal on the recommendation of Adjutant General Lauck and Inspector General Wilhelm.
An unusually large crowd attended Wednesday night’s Eagles meeting as plans to obtain larger Lodge quarters were debated. A committee of Carl Hamilton C W Ball Frank Patterson and William McCoy was chosen to assist trustees J P Zerbe Al King and Rd Judd in pursuing several potential locations for new rooms. The crate of seven may report at any time.
Harry Kinney, jailed on robbery charges in West Lafayette and Conesville, is kept in a prison dungeon after escalating violent outbursts. Rivcey proclaims innocence as Kinney curses loudly, bangs his cell, and is restrained and isolated on bread and water. Sheriff Browning orders placement in the dark solitary cell to restore order.
Delegates at a Philadelphia reform convention nominate a county ticket for November. Sheriff Wesson H Brown Coroner J M Lemon City Commissioners Rudolph Blaikenburg Edward A Andersenc Judge Common Pleas Court Craig Biddle Judge Orphans Court Morris Dallett The prevailing Republican nominees retain their posts. Mayor Weaver endorses the ticket urging unity to defeat the machine in the election.
The fine spacious barn on John Casey’s farm just north of Clark burned to the ground at noon today caused by boys playing with matches. The hay mow was packed with hay and 250 bushels of wheat and 300 bushels of oats stored nearby. Threshing machine owned by Sickel Bros., threshed Wednesday. No animals were lost and smaller implements were saved though the loss is considerable. Mr and Mrs Joe Thiel have gone to Zanesville to visit relatives and attend the fair. Mrs J D Donaldson is visiting friends in Columbus. Imma Garr left for Hot Vogel this morning.
