Sheriff Breaks Up Woods Prize Fight Near Illinois Line
Newport Indiana October 2 Sheriff Stephen disrupted a prize fight in the woods near the Illinois state line arresting 300 spectators. Principals Kid Hubert of Kansas City and Carl Anderson of Hammond Indiana were in the ring when the sheriff announced arrests and the crowd fled. Anderson and his manager Kid Hennessy of Danville Illinois were handcuffed and brought to jail. Hubert escaped with the crowd. Most spectators were from Danville.

Fred Baad, about forty and unmarried, was struck and killed by a Wheeling freight train two miles north of Chili Station at about 4 AM Sunday. Witnesses Will Klein and Charles Smith, crossing at Schumaker’s crossing, found human remains scattered on the track. Coroner Lear ordered the body moved to Baltic.
