Railroad Disaster Near Baggeston Utah Claims Several Lives

An October railroad accident near Bggnston Utah on the Union Pacific left multiple dead and many wounded. The westbound passenger train derailed and was struck by a following emigrant train that ignored signals. Passenger Joan Bustino was killed and Percy wounded in the head. Three Mormon emigrants died and five were injured. Two physicians aboard the train treated the wounded. The emigrant train crew and its engine driver were dismissed by Superintendent C H. Schaller for fault.

Steamboat Stonewall Burned With Heavy Losses Near Grand Tower

The steamer Stonewall burned last night fourteen miles below Grand Tower. An estimated 150 to 218 lives were lost with about 250 aboard including 60 crew. Survivors report the fire started when a passenger left a lit candle on hay. The Belle Memphis rescued 15 passengers. Captain Scott, Frank Murrey, and several others are listed as missing or dead. The ship carried cattle and freight valued around $15,000, with extensive insurance coverage.
