A letter from the Office of the Adjutant General cheers Coshocton’s bid for a National Guard company. Sergeant McParland advocates steadily, while delays and shifting support have clouded the effort. The adjutant general cites a government push to muster new units and will likely favor Coshocton once papers are acted on.
A well known businessman who enjoys fishing was caught this morning exposing a secret. He returned from his basin with a fine string of bass and received congratulations. A professional fisherman later visited his store and presented a 25 cent claim for yesterday's sale.
Mrs Zeila Day files for divorce from James W Ear in Jackson township probate court alleging abandonment in December 1896 and failure to provide for Mrs Day and their three children. She asks for custody and alimony.
Hayes Wood, owner of a Walnut Street meat market, files in common pleas Friday alleging John S. Bretzius sold him $17.06 worth of tainted pork on April 4. Wood began selling it in good faith, faced rumors it was unfit for food, and seeks $150 in damages plus the perk price. Attorney R. Powelson represents Wood.
Citizens organize Cosbuctun County cycling group to push a July Fourth event. A shared bicycle parade is planned with about 50 riders joining a morning road race from Trinway and afternoon track events at the fairground.
Jeremiah Stickie prominent local farmer in Franklin Township collapsed in a field while planting corms shortly before noon Friday. Despite aid from Dr Henderson, he died from suspected heart trouble. He was 60 years old and survived by a son and two daughters.
The Adamsville and Co shocton Electric firm plans another petition to secure a Coshocton franchise. A.J. Miller presented a petition to Chestnut Street property owners seeking council approval for streets and alleys rights. Objections cited route vagueness. petition was returned to E.G. Abbott. Abbott says petitions will be rewritten to avoid objections and likely issued soon.
Pan Handle officer Magner and fellow road officers hunt a tramp armed with a revolver wanted for shooting Officer Friend near McDonald Wednesday night. Believed to have rode a train west, the suspect was arrested during the engagement when the tragedy occurred.
The paving of streets widens sidewalks and increases water department work. The last ring on Main Street between Fifth and Sixth was moved to the curb line Thursday night. Similar work will occur on Walnut and at Second and Chestnut once paving is finished.
William Carnahan died after a long illness in Coshocton aged 71. Born February 24 1829 in White Eyes township he moved to Coshocton in 1874 and lived there ever since. He leaves his wife and daughter Mrs W W Shaw. Funeral is set for tomorrow at 2 pm with burial in Coshocton Cemetery.
Rev Mr Reuss returns from the semimonthly conference in New York and reports officers elected for the German Evangelical church in Muskingum Licking Coshocton and Tuscarawas counties. Mrs. Roberts, widow of a well known local doctor, turned ninety Thursday. She traveled from her West Bedford area home to the city where a portrait was taken and a small birthday party held at a relative’s house.
Findlay delegates chose W Hi King of Richard Lanning Post to represent the Sixteenth district at the National Encampment of the Grand Army. King is a well known local G A R member and his friends congratulate him on this honor.

The Gray Hardware reports true fishing continues at Walbunding though guilties remain unfound. New passenger engines are not run east of Dennison on the Pan Handle with through trains changing at Jennison. President Haskins of the Obie Mine workers says nearly every miner in the state is at work with overall activity high despite some slack in parts.
A Columbus paper offered prizes for school essays. The winner wrote about the Muskingum river noting it rises in Coshocton county. A German Lutheran church musicale and ice cream social led by Nellie Schaich on Main street May 18 aims to remodel the church. Prof Schaeffer directs and Henry Battestin sings with H Roland playing zither. Tickets 15 cents, children 10.
G L Peck, superintendent for the Pennsylvania company, says land costs block a new Coshocton passenger station despite years of effort. Officials have not settled on a plan as property owners seek “fabulous prices” and only a small ground purchase at Sixth street may have moved forward. The old depot may remain in use while decisions loom.
George Catentine, lineman for Citizens' company, drove to repair a line break on the Warsaw road. At Hershman school a dog struck the horse team, they bolted the buggy overturned injuring Calentine in the head and shoulders. The horses returned home and vanished, the buggy damaged. Calentine telephoned for another wagon and continued repairs.
The Democratic primaries produced only 187 votes with precinct tallies showing 20 in First Precinct 34 in Second 21 in Third and 112 in Fourth underscoring limited local interest.
