Sunday school delegates from Coshocton county closed the convention with about 100 attendees. Newton Bender was elected president as Coshocton hosted what delegates called the best convention in the organization’s history with strong talks on primary work and Sunday school methods.
The convention elected Newton Bender of Warsaw as president and Corena Daugherty of Avondale as secretary, Joseph Love of Coshocton as treasurer, George M. Gray of Coshocton as secretary home department, Rev. Mr Stockdale of Roscoe as normal department head, and Miss Maud Davis of Conesville as primary department chief. The final meeting, held Friday evening, featured devotional by Rev. Mr. Douling, a Sunday school urging address, and a concluding consecration led by Rev. C C Erwin, leaving Coshocton with warm regard for its hospitable people.
The Walhoading bridge at Denman ford near Coshocton is open to traffic after months of delays and higher costs than the contract. It was finished Friday afternoon and the first vehicle crossed in the evening. The Canton company invested substantial funds and expects the bridge to become a popular route.
John Drew, a bridge builder hurt when falsework failed on the Panhandle bridge project near Goldenhurst in Tuscarawas county, files a negligence petition against a Delaware-based corporation. He alleges severe back injuries, a crushed spinal column, abdominal injuries, and permanent disability, seeking $25,000 in damages.
Thirty seven new books were yesterday placed on the shelves of the public library. The list includes works by Crawford Morrow Sienkiewicz and Doyle among others and features biographies and travelogues.
The Walnut Street building hosted a teachers examination on June 9. James M. Stewart and Miss Mayvie Laird wed at the bride’s parents home in Pleasant Valley Thursday evening. Rev. C. M. Puk jen officiated. A number of friends attended. Stewart is a well known union leader and president of the local United Mine Workers branch, active in labor movements.
Charles Craig of Walnut Street employed by Novelly Advertising as engineer was scalded when he slipped into a six foot deep pit with hot water while repairing an automatic pump. He was treated at home after medic al aid was summoned. Benjamin Bantum of Bethlehem Townsip died at home after a long illness at age seven. He leaves four sons and five daughters. His funeral was held at Prairie Chapel on the 12th.
Mrs Isaac Bille of Jackson township was sent back to the Columbus hospital by sheriff Hedne after a recent trial visit. Her condition worsened over the past week, prompting authorities to repossess her care. Friends had hoped for improvement.
Passenger traffic on the Pan Handle grows heavier during the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia. Enthusiastic Republicans lead the crowd, while many others ride to eastern points, attracting noise and activity along the route.
The completion of Walnut Street Depravement makes the thoroughfare ideal for bicycle riding in the city. Wheelmen find it excellent for a fast start at the hill and a smooth ride to the river. They encounter some difficulty at Hickory and Fifth Streets, but west of there the path remains clear.
The Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad plans major changes effective July 15 with passenger traffic opening to Zanesville from Cleveland and vice versa. Downtown passenger service ends, the Hill station is renovated with telegraph and freight upgrades, and ticketing shifts to the Pan Handle in Zanesville while new tracks, switches, and terminal facilities are built along the line.
The Gray Hardware Co. notes a child of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Knode on lower Main street is improving after a veranda accident with no permanent injury expected. A Roscoe M. P. church quilt in C. L. Peacock’s shoe store window draws attention, each patch bearing a contributor’s name. A street wheelman, trying to meet lamp rules, rode Main with a red lantern on the handlebar, resembling a sewer‑signal. The AGE office received a birthday call from Mr. James Davis of Bethlehem township, a 70‑plus year old citizen, vigorous and active, a strong Republican.
The board of education will meet this evening to elect the corps of school teachers for the year. Last year’s staff all applied for their old positions except Miss Tooker who will be married and Mr Endsley who has a better placement. Many applications have been received from out of town candidates.
An appeal urges readers to send offerings to aid starving Indians cited as dying by famine. The Christian Herald coordinates collecting funds and will report acknowledgments and send donations to India. Four offerings are requested to come soon to save needy people from death.
A society entertainment and supper at Mr and Mrs Alen Marshall's home honored their daughter Miss Kate last Saturday. Instrumental music by Sproul McCurdy Drescher and Misses Johnson Sproul plus German and English songs by Miss Drescher and Lorenz. About sixty guests attended from nearby towns and distant places. Notable attendees included Miss Lamenz Everhar Messrs King Drescher Lorenz from Chili Mr Eegar Beall Keene Mr Dick Walker and sister Warsaw Ed Crawford Tescoe Drs Dean and McCurdy Tunnel Hill Moscow. Refreshments featured ice cream strawberries lemonade bananas cake. Miss Katie received praise for her reception and arrangements.
Doctor Donahue spoke to a large Grace church audience on China and the work of Missionaries in the country. She is well acquainted with conditions from years spent there and was invited by the Woman's Historical era to stay in the city Monday for an afternoon meeting, then went to New Philadelphia last evening.
Charles Newell a noted Cescocton Coal Company miner married Minnie Vansickle Saturday. Rev S A Fisher officiated and the bridal party visited Rollin Newell’s Pleasant Valley home where friends serenaded the couple and celebration continued.
S G Tompkins a well known resident of Cherry street died yesterday at 8 o clock after a lengthy illness. Interment will be made in South Lawn Thursday afternoon at 1 30 o clock. He was 53 years old.
