Coshocton sees fewer new houses than anticipated as building costs soar halting many private and rental projects. The housing boom delays reflect high prices for lumber and materials, with a predicted slump before summer ends.
Citizens reacted to a special Dennison train arranged for a Columbus trip to see Admiral Dewey. Coshocton riders faced a standard round trip fare while Dennison was offered a $1 25 rate under arrangements that covered all expenses, drawing criticism from railway workers.
The term Boxers arose from a Chinese anti foreign movement. A Columbus newspaper translated from a German authority notes that in May 199% a group formed sects with colorful names before becoming Wide-Awake Fist. When troops pursued them they fled to Onthsien and Ping provinces and called themselves Fist of Patriotism and Peace, giving the later sobriquet Boxers.
Hon. Daniel J. Ryan and W F F Lewis for the United Mine Workers of Ohio filed in the Columbus supreme court a brief supporting the constitutionality of the screen law. They claim it is a police regulation and uphold its validity.
Ed Bagant, a brakeman from Dennison, was injured Monday when an air hose burst causing the caboose to stop suddenly. He was cut and bruised about the body. he was in the caboose at the time.
Mrs Tidball believed connected to the death of her grandchild in Monroe township was brought to Coshocton by her brother Lou Smith. An inquest into her lunacy was held and Judge Bowie ordered her commitment to the Columbus asylum. She is to be taken there today.
Religious revival fills Chalfants M E Church as two women evangelists from India lead large services. Crowds from Coshocton and Roscoe attend, with meetings continuing into next week.
Court records show first account of guardian William Graham for Samuel R. Hunter. Admin of George Gamble’s estate granted to Elizabeth Shryock against Jessie Shearn et al. Various land transfers and valuations listed across Coshocton and surrounding townships with parcel sizes from 22 to 633 rods and sums from 100 to 5500 dollars.
Major Randies, employed at Carbatt's tannery in Roscoe, fell into a pit Tuesday afternoon when the edge gave way. He climbed out with difficulty and escaped uninjured, though acids in tanning could have caused serious harm if he had remained.
Coshocton county commissioners settled the sending of county orphans to the Cleveland Protestant home. Cleveland offered care at a lower price than Tuscarawas county and the New Philadelphia home arrangements were made. The cost dropped from 10 to 3 9 per child per year, keeping Tuscarawas children at the new rate and likely sending future ones to Cleveland.
Sergeant Harry Hack received a general's letter Wednesday morning naming him mustering officer for Spanish American War veterans. He will begin work immediately and aims to organize the group quickly. Sergeant E R McFarland will assist. A meeting is set for next Wednesday evening.
A series of weddings highlighted in Keene and surrounding townships. Joseph L. Stewart wed Irene Marshail at the bride’s home near Tyrone with Rev. B C Seu ter officiating. F Mildred Shannon married George Whittemore at Rev. Fitch’s residence. Bell Lawrence married Fred Kienzle at L H Lawrence home Mole Creek with Rev. Fitch officiating. The couples plan homes in Bethlehem township Madison Iowa and Niagara Falls after festive receptions.
The Coshocton counting effort continues with Enumerator Judds finishing a southern west section and urging uncounted residents to contact him. Enumerator Hamilton covers the northern west Pan Handle area and will finish in days. Lodging residents may leave slips with name birth date place occupation and father birthplace for easier counting. Enumerators face penalties for disclosing official information.
A big crowd is expected as the Itill Delegates meet in Coshocton on June 13 and 14. Home hospitality will host delegates, with President C. L. Peacock urging Sunday schools to send delegate names immediately to arrange entertainment.
A graphophone entertainment will be given June 14 at Amity church with refreshments afterward to benefit the church. A second event at Blooming Grove church promises refreshments on the lawn Saturday evening with a cordial invitation to the public for a pleasant evening.
Miss Tena Martter suffered painful but not serious injuries Wednesday afternoon when a wheel struck a large stone on a city grade off the Walhending bridge, throwing her from the bicycle and causing several bruises.
The humane society failed to act this morning on a case of severe horse abuse. The animal, described as a frame, suffers with visible ribs and hip bones, dragging a heavy load. Its owner remains unnamed, and the driver should be made to provide care or face penalties.
The auditor and county commissioners form the board of equalization and meet the first Wednesday after the third Monday in May to review assessor returns. They met May 23 with reports incomplete, adjourned, and will reconvene June 18 after remaining reports, including Tuscarawas township.
The Co shocton Military band orchestra completed engagements for the season at West Lafayette commencements and will regroup for next year. A new harpist and trap drummer are added, with Italian Professor Falco to play the harp and Ed. Caine as drummer. The orchestra will be organized once new members arrive.
Chief Collier issues rules for examination and licensing of engineers. Exams will be oral from a quarterly printed question list. each district examiner gets a unique set. Horsepower is calculated for tubular boilers with 1/4 square foot grate per HP, natural draft. forced draft adds 20 percent. Records kept include percent passing, engineers’ addresses, last places of employment, and licensing statute section.
Mr and Mrs D Boyd and daughter Nellie led a group of three Roscoe relatives on a six mile dam outing. The party fished through the day but none of them caught a fish, though lunch was prepared and served by the ladies at noon.
Earl F. Woods, 19, a minor and passenger on the Borgan Row train, sues Wheeling and Lake Erie for damages after a collision with an extra freight last November. The petition, filed Wednesday by Captain Compton, seeks 125 damages for bruises and injuries Woods sustained when the car went over a hill and he jumped to save himself.
The New Century club was charmingly entertained by Miss Agnes Crawford at her South Fourth Street home. It was the last meeting of the year with light refreshments. Miss Louise Herbig, returning from Forest Green Maryland where she studied, attended as a guest.
A rolling mill company shipped a large batch of steel sheets to a Columbus manufacturing concern for use as ceilings. One sheet is currently being installed in the McNanus building.
Tuscarawas County capitalists secured franchises for an electric line from Uhrichsville to Newcomerstown a year ago but little progress followed. A recent Uhrichsville Chronicle note says promoters are active again and negotiating for construction with work possibly starting this year after franchises were already granted by the county and towns along the route.

Columbus police seek the Italian suspect in Joe Milligan's murder. Pan Handle posts a strict work policy for Dennison shops with no leaves except illness. Geo A Hay chairs the Ohio Convict Labor Commission formed by Governor Nash to study prison labor conditions.
