Kansas Flood Tale From a Traveling Man
Edward Rentzler, a New York house traveler, recalls riding a Union Pacific train jammed by the Kansas flood between Topeka and Kansas City. Water rose to wheel hubs, the engine fires died, sixteen hours passed in darkness with no food or drink, and relief came only after a high-boat construction engine reached the stranded car. He describes surrounding water as far as the eye could see and the terror of being trapped in a flooded Kansas valley.

At Columbus June 4 the Republican state convention endorsed Theodore Roosevelt for president and nominated Myron T Herrick of Cleveland for governor by acclamation. Harding was named for lieutenant governor after Albert Douglass urged acclamation. Guilbert and McKinnon received first ballot support for auditor and treasurer, with Summers finally chosen for supreme judge after three ballots. Jones, Bonebrake and others were voted on for school commissioner and public works, with Jones later made unanimous. The convention adjourned at 3 o clock.

Coshocton Man Arrested in Stark County Tragedy
Simon Brandt of near Wilmot was arrested by Stark County Sheriff and jailed in Canton on a $6000 bond for the assault that killed Reeves Mitchell of Mt Hope. Attorneys Atlee Pomerene and E Olmstead others, and Coroner Schiltz investigated at the Brandt farm near Wilmot. Neighbors urged vigilante action. Brandt ill and bedridden.

Telegraph report from Oklahoma claims John Wilkes Booth died by his own hand in January but Baltimore sources insist Booth’s body was exhumed in Washington and taken to Baltimore where it was identified by family and others and now rests in the Booth lot.
