Twenty Miners Entombed After West Virginia Mine Explosion
Charleston January 19 a dust explosion at Paint Creek Collieries mines east of the city entombed about twenty men. At least eighteen were inside when the blast occurred. Relatives gathered at the mine mouth as rescuers, hampered by dense smoke, formed squads and tunnels to reach the drifts 200 feet inside. Names of the entombed include Isaac Pancake and several Bridgeman brothers among others.

In Bemont, Jan 18, farmers north of Morristown county improvised a unique phone network by tying instruments to barbed wire fences. The system, used for years, transmitted signals with clocklike ticks between farms and was eventually shut down by fines from the Morristown Telephone Co. for unpermitted connections.
