George W. Perkins once dubbed the smartest man in New York, a partner of J Pierpont Morgan and former vice president of New York Life. His rise started from a $300 salary clerk to $75,000 as VP before joining Morgan’s firm and seeking salary reductions.
The Coshocton Glass Co reorganizes with Hippolyt Liewer as President and Thomas J. Gainor as Vice President and Superintendent. Liewers announce plans to move to Coshocton and expand capacity to exceed 600 employs within a year, with output rising toward 30 million bottles annually.
There was unusual activity among candidates for The Age trophies with many position changes after yesterday’s balloting. Mrs Wilbur Barton leads the Dame group, while Mrs Nora Pocock trails closely. Harriet Wright climbs to third. Gail Hamilton gains on 1. Sahling holds second. L O Rawson starts in third as Harris drops to fourth. Votes total 577 yesterday with 360 for ladies and 598 for gentlemen. Voting continues through February with subscriptions yielding ballots and a chance for two diamond rings as prizes.
Judge Eason insists on meticulous journal entries for the Dickerson case saying every minor detail matters. He told The Age he reviews every word to avoid technicalities or delays that could affect the case.
The Typographical Union 263 of Ashville North Carolina celebrated the start of the new eight hour day with a festive banquet January 4 at the Club Cafe and Candy Kitchen. H C Hull former resident and union secretary treasurer attended and responded to a toast about why Coshocton should be the capital of Ohio. The banquet menu and toasts are noted as souvenirs of the event. Also reported is the settlement of the Tom Young vs Ham Young case in Mainfield with Merrell and Roche representing the local side. The suit involved a horse misrepresentation and was settled for $22 plus costs.
Cantwell of Cantwell Shoe Co. asks The Age to deny rumors he will move from the Hay building to the Crawford store in the Selby building. The Crawford room is expected to stay a dry goods shop with new local buyers ready by February 1. Indignation over the rumor runs through the business community. George Hykes of Coneusville faced a disorderly conduct charge on a passenger train and paid a dollar plus costs.
Mrs Vosburgh died in New York state while visiting her daughter Mrs Pierce on South Lawn Avenue. The 86 year old widow suffered paralysis after a brief illness and is survived by three daughters and two sons including Mrs Abbie Waterman and Mrs John Burdick. Funeral services by Rev Clark will be at the Pierce residence Saturday at 2 pm, with interment in South Lawn Cemetery.
Ohio measures favored by the Ohio Anti League will be introduced in the legislature. Wayne B. Wheeler says temperance bills include search and seizure in dry terms and a Brannock bill replica. Senate approved a popular vote for U S senators by the people in a close vote after debate. Arthur Moore in Tiffin and Mrs. John Gray visiting Warsaw.
The board of health met with Mayor Smith presiding and new member George Gray attending. Maller read the six month health report noting 7 vaults cleaned, 51 vaults cleaned earlier, 260 garbage cans placed, 40 houses fumigated, 35 rooms fumigated, 4 houses under quarantine, 0 deaths from contagious diseases, and 49 deaths from other causes.
Judge Eason issued a mandamus against the Washington township board of education to provide a Cooperdale schoolhouse or explain why it should not. The order, dated January 192, was sought by state attorneys Adams Daughlens and Roche for the state of Ohio against Wright, J B Trego and the board members. The school currently occupies the condemned old store room repurposed for school use.
