In a storm off Sicily aboard The Gull from Cagliari to Palermo two Englishmen, Guy Tressilian and Jasper Lowder, face disaster. Tressilian dies, Lowder survives but plunders his friend’s possessions, then plots to claim his fortune by posing as the dead man. A Sicilian fisherman rescues them as Lowder seeks to flee responsibility, while the Ledger advertises future installments.
