The first Sunday school in Stone County was formed in June 1869 in a log schoolhouse at the base of hills. A day school of 30 scholars, some adults, used Wobater’s Spelling book. A boy shouted to be counted. The piece recalls the Inebriate Asylum at Bedford lacking endowment and jokes about endowment by the Fejoo Islands.
The passage urges young men to value punctuality and reliability in business. It stresses being present, meeting promises, avoiding idle talk, paying debts, and acting with integrity. It warns against laziness, unnecessary spending, meddling, and reliance on others’ words instead of thinking for oneself. It cautions to say no firmly and to keep a few trusted confidants.
The document declares support for Grant's administration and its policies,aims to conciliate, economy and justice, and affirms fidelity to the 14th and 15th amendments, reconstruction measures, and a pro labor and wartime veterans aid program. It criticizes the late Democratic Assembly for wasteful spending, taxation issues, and dismantling liberties, while endorsing a Soldiers Orphans fund and protective measures for veterans families.
