Ohio voters reject McLean backed political machine
The Ohio municipal elections reveal strong pushback against McLean backed political maneuvers and the Standard McLennan ring. Voters show disapproval of legislative bargains, while McLean’s senatorial prospects fade, and President Cleveland’s view of McLean’s lack of pocket influence is affirmed. The piece then shifts to a consular report from Russia noting high state distillery output, reduced licensure since 1873, and widespread clandestine drinking despite fewer licensed saloons. It highlights Russian drinking culture and even cologne water as a substitute in some towns.
