A large patriotic assembly at the Corydon public school auditorium drew people from across the county on Wednesday October 14. Lieutenant Robinson and Wilson E. Cook spoke about liberty democracy and war history, urging support for Liberty Bond sales and visits to Camp with care packages for soldiers.
The event featured readings by C. W. Thomas and sermons by Rev Fred Smith and Rev J. L. Battram. Col. Schultz and Lt. Robinson of the 834th Infantry delivered addresses. The audience, including many Old Boys, rose to thank them and pledged a future charity trip to Camp Zachary Taylor with Harrison county foods.
A poem from a Civil War scrap book by Margaret E. Breckinridge reprinted in the Star celebrates a nurselike figure knitting socks for soldiers. It praises unnamed volunteers, sounds out Fort Sumter memory, and vows perseverance and faith as a soldier goes forward.
Claude Balthis of New Albany retires as president of Mutual Trusters Deposit Company after five years due to ill health. Judge Alexander Dowling elected to fill the vacancy. Balthis was the largest stockholder and known in Corydon. Mrs Balthis is daughter of the late Louis Bowling, former county treasurer. For sale a fine driving horse buggy and harness. George Applegate and Lew M. O Bannon of Corydon attended the Twenty Third Annual Convention of the Ohio Valley Improvement Association at the McCurdy Hotel Evansville as Harrison county delegates. The group promotes navigation improvement from Pittsburgh to Cairo and outlines plans for nine foot water year round aided by dam construction including one at New Boston. The Evansville gathering featured leaders from several states with John L. Vance of Columbus as president and W C Culkins of Cincinnati as secretary. The association will meet next year in Louisville.
Notes to income taxpayers outline new war tax requirements with exemptions and filing windows for 1918 year. The bulletin details who must pay, exemption amounts, and where to obtain blank forms from the Collector, plus general local agricultural and personal news items.
A shooting at the East 4th and Main street home in New Albany leaves Mrs. Julia Byerley and her daughter Leona dead. Harry Bailey, estranged from his wife, fired multiple shots then fled along the river road before being jailed after a confrontation with his father in law. Bailey claimed the women had separated him from his wife and threatened to blow up the house. The victims were connected to Corydon residents through marriage.
The Indiana Horticultural Society announces that on November 21 to 27 at Washington Indiana the annual growers conference and Indiana Apple show feature Prof. John P. Stewart of Penn State and Prof. W H Alderman of the University of West Virginia. Stewart reports fertilization yields from 50 to 460 bushels per acre. Alderman will judge exhibits and lecture on orchard management. Over 400 bushels are stored in Washington with 20 bushels daily entering the Ebner Ice and Cold Storage show room. Purdue will run a two day packing school November 19 and 20 in the exhibit hall to train exhibitors for show and market.
The Vincennes Bridge Company of Vincennes Indiana reports rapid progress on the new bridge over Big Indian Creek near the railroad depot. All wooden framework is erected and only the flat needs laying and drying before completion. Once fall rains begin the bridge will be needed as the creek will soon be fordable only with difficulty.

Wounded in France, Lee H. McKinney of New Albany reports his brother-in-law Charles F. Kitterrouan was injured at the Battle of Flanders and treated in a Paris hospital. He will receive a disability discharge and had joined a Canadian battalion. Kitterman, born south of Corydon, moved to Canada about eight years ago. Also noted: Floyd Knobs Fair Association filed articles of incorporation with Thomas Fenwick, H. J. Loesch, and Lafayette Reach as incorporators. Capital stock $5,000 in 5,000 shares to promote livestock breeding and local horticulture and agriculture, including a county fair.
Mrs. Anna E. Douglas of Princeton turned eighty last Thursday. Her daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs Ed B Funk hosted a large dinner. Mrs. Douglas formerly lived in Corydon where she served as postmistress. A U S Congress delegation led by Parker Taylor Johnson Goodwin Stevens Timberlake Dill Hecks Miller and Dae arrived in Europe to study conditions.
