Indiana University Southeastern Campus in Jeffersonville held an Honors Day Convocation honoring top students for scholastic achievement. Speaker Dr. Smith Higgins, dean of I U regional campuses, addressed attendees. Awardees included Edgar E. Smith, Joseph P. Malone, Dennis C. Ott, and James W. Bye. Ott received a Department Award for business administrative studies.
Corydon Town Board discussed federal Public Housing Administration funds for constructing low-rent units and financing via bonds repaid by rent and federal aid. A municipal nursing home was proposed with typical room charges around $12 per day. The board will continue discussion at the June 12 meeting.
Ninety-seven individuals volunteered and ninety-one pints were collected Tuesday afternoon during the five hour Bloodmobile visit by the Louisville Red Cross Chapter at the Harrison Post American Legion Home. The quota of 96 was not reached.
Jaycees report a successful four day Pancake Festival despite rain. Fish Fry Friday drew a larger crowd under Chet Miller and Larry Orme, with pancake service by Miller and Orme. Queen candidates rode in convertibles Friday as rain shifted crowning to Masonic Hall. CCHS Band led parade.
Fifty members of South Central High School senior class traveled by bus to Washington D C last Wednesday and returned Sunday. Faculty chaperones were Donald Dones and Mrs Margaret Glasgow.
Officers and members of the Corydon Central High School Adult Boosters Club expect a large crowd for the All Sports Banquet. Howard L. Sharpe, long-time Gerstmeyer coach, will be principal speaker with a program honoring Cross Country, Track and Field, Basketball, Football, Baseball, and Golf alongside the new Athletic Scholastic Award. The event also recognizes the Booster Club All-Round Athlete, Musial-style awards, and various sport-specific trophies presented by school and local sponsors.
Four days remain for property owners to file assessment forms and mortgage exemption claims with township assessors and trustees. The deadline is Monday May 15. County Auditor Jesse W. Mathes noted the date while County Treasurer Ben F. Brown said taxpayers who mailed spring tax payments before May 1 will be processed soon.
Thomas Rusk is expected home Tuesday after a year in Vietnam with the Scout Dogs of the 25th Infantry Platoon. He was wounded twice during action and will take 30 days leave with his parents Mr and Mrs Roy Rusk of Mauckport before a new station assignment for six remaining months of service.
The Posey Township Farm Bureau will meet May 16 at 8 o clock in Riverside Church on Road 111. Members are invited to attend this community gathering to discuss local agricultural concerns.
The Brown & Brown Construction Company of Scottsburg submitted the low bid of 254518.63 for a new West Bridge over Big Indian Creek on West Walnut Street US 460. Works planned include a 30 foot wide concrete and steel four span bridge with a seven degree skew, replacing the 1949 wooden structure. Construction expected within weeks and completion in 150 working days.
Harold Spencer suffered severe burns while working on a automobile that caught fire and exploded last Friday evening. He was rushed to Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany for treatment. Physicians reported his left arm and left hand were badly burned and he should stay in the hospital for two weeks or more. His condition Tuesday was reported gradually improving.
The Classroom Teachers Association of Central School Corporation held a dinner at Stagecoach Restaurant in Palmyra to honor retiring teachers and those leaving the system this year. Attendees included Corydon Central staff and new members from St Joseph’s Elementary. Retirees named were Henry Sonner and Helen Kirkham. Departing staff also include Annette Nolan Susanne Puryear Peggy Gibbs Michael Frederick Warren Minton and Karen Sechrist. Entertainment featured Future Teachers of America seniors parodying To Tell The Truth with panels and emcee Mrs. Sue Wood. Superintendent Edmund Schneider spoke on achievements as the group celebrated the year.
