John T Lawrence pleaded guilty last Thursday to uttering forged checks at Corydon National Bank for £555 and First National Bank for 2563. Judge Cook sentenced him to the Jeffersonville Reformatory for two to fourteen years, the terms to run simultaneously. Police from Indianapolis pursued him to Waterloo Iowa where he was wounded during capture and later detained by Sheriff Ward as he began serving the sentence.
Mrs. William K Vanderbilt Sr donates over 1 million dollars for four model tuberculosis sanitary tenements in New York. The Shively Sanitary tenements will be six stories tall with about 3875 apartments and moderate rents, linked to Dr Henry L Shively of Presbyterian Hospital.

Governor Marshall vetoed four court bills on February 22. The measures would have created courts at Linton Keene Gary Hammond and Owen counties costing about 40000 annually. He said creating such courts is unwise beyond public necessity and that his veto is not an attempt to interfere with the legislature.
Catherine Hart born Miller died at her Bradford area home on the 20th alt. She joined the M E church at Radford about five years ago and said all is well. She leaves two children Otto Davis of Cincinnati and Mrs Elmer Mosier of Bradford, eight grandchildren and many friends. Funeral by Rev J O Seibert at the residence on Monday the 22d ult and remains shipped to Cincinnati for burial.

A four year old committee examined government printing costs and found expenses rising from 200 000 in 1840 to over 7 million in 1905. Rent for storage of largely valueless public documents amounts to 15 500 yearly with 9 500 tons of books, enough to load a railroad train about three miles long. The report suggests significant waste in public printing.

Former Democratic National Chairman Thomas Taggart asks the Supreme Court to set aside a $2500 damages verdict won by Reed Carradine, a newspaper man, over an alleged false arrest. Carradine said Taggart arranged a check cashing at the Waldorf Astoria on September 22, 1905, and later claimed the cashier doubted the check. A hotel detective reportedly detained Carradine, who faced humiliation before the check cleared.
A plea urges readers to pay subscriptions only by bank check or post office money order and warns that cash sent by mail is unsafe. It notes repeated reader reports of money with no accompanying letter reaching the office and reinforces that cash should never be mailed.
