Mary Sawyer and the Lamb Tale in Early American Lore
Storied account traces Mary Sawyer born March 22 1806 in Sterling Massachusetts to the famous nursery rhyme Mary Had a Little Lamb. The lamb followed Mary to school, inspired Harvard student John Roulstone to write the poem, and its legacy funded Boston’s Old South Church when stockings spun from the lamb’s wool were sold to aid the church. Mary later married Tyler, lived in Somerville, and is buried near Longfellow at Mt Auburn. Also a local ad for a hay press and gas engine sale by Chas H Toler in Corydon Indiana.
