Indiana Historical Society Tour Highlights Corydon Pilgrimage

Twenty eight Indiana Historical Society members visited Corydon to explore Indiana’s birth place. The group traveled from Indianapolis via Dixie Flyer and interurban lines, toured the Old State Capitol and Constitution Elm, and heard speeches by Indianapolis leaders. They also visited New Albany and Jeffersonville with receptions and a Saturday evening program featuring local bands and speakers.

Reverend Hewitt Cunningham to Preach in Elizabeth

Rev Hewitt F Cunningham of La conia and Louisville will preach at the Elizabeth Presbyterian Church next Sunday night July 1. He is a trained minister in progress at the Presbyterian Seminary Louisville and a World War II veteran wounded overseas. A large crowd is expected as locals praise his preaching and the historic Pilgrims visit concludes with remarks by Ex Congressman James W Dunbar.

Death of Good Man James Burgess

James Burgess longtime Harrison county resident died last Saturday at his daughter’s home in New Albany. Born May 19 1841 in Lincolnshire England he lived in Indiana most of his life and died June 28 1928 at 12 45 AM aged 82. He married Louisa Birdwell May 18 1865 and had five children fifteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was a devout church member and Sunday School superintendent for over forty years. Burial followed at Fairview Cemetery New Albany.

Wartime relics and historic papers showcased in supplement

The two page Supplement features relics of war such as Indian bows and stone axes, powder horns, and accounts of Morgan’s raid. It highlights Harrison County Seminary records from 1827 to 1851, historical journals, and old Indiana papers, urging preservation for a future Corydon State Museum.

Solemn First Communion Service At Saint Peters Parish

A class of twelve children four boys and eight girls celebrated Solemn Communion last Sunday. The procession moved from the parsonage to the church at 9 00 am led by the cross and followed by choirs, servers, and the eight girls in white with wreaths. The ceremony included baptismal vows renewed, Mass with a sermon by Father Schenk, and benediction.
