A 1870 Iowa dispatch critiques Geo Boutwell public debt figures from 1869 to 1870. It questions monthly debt reductions, cites a New Year total of 2 626 653 870 31 and claims a rise to 31 400 799 09 by January 1 1870. It compares government outlays for 1869–70 and forecasts higher deficits, ending with a rural quip about a Pennsylvanian’s misfortune and hogs.
A scavenged patchwork of vignettes notes Congress using military govern ment to compel state ratification of amendments. It mocks political manipulation, social foibles, and curiosities from races, barber shops, and tattoing infants to corroded politics and a famed New York editor.
A Louisville and Nashville railroad tornado struck Cave City on January 17 at four in the morning. It destroyed about fifty houses and left no fewer than five hundred people homeless and destitute of clothing and food in under two minutes. Union church and the Mason ic Lodge and College suffered total losses. a tobacco barn containing ten thousand dollars of tobacco was blown apart. Two thirds of families were left homeless, with survivors recalling astonishing devastation and scattered debris across fields and roads.
An advertisement touts Dr. Limerick's Chill Cure as greatly improved and beyond controversy as the best chill remedy of the age. It claims the tonic is pure harmless and unequaled and urges readers to buy a bottle and spread the word that no others are genuine.
Dr Limerick and Co advertise a permanent cure for chills saying once cured the chill does not return. Wholesale houses in New Albany and Corydon are authorized to sell to the trade at the same price as the lab. Dr W Reader of Corydon Indiana lists sale. May 25 60 ly.
