France has occupied Ruhr coal mines and industrial plants in Germany for unpaid war reparations, provoking German orders against mining and a nationwide miners strike. Germany resumes passive resistance as fears of wider European conflict grow, with calls for US mediation and questions of Germany's payment ability.
Mrs Mary Steph wife of Charles Steph departed this life January 15 1523 after three weeks illness of stomach cancer at Frenchtown Ind She was born March 3 1558 in Portland Ky Daughter of Henry and Margaret Bosier She leaves husband three sons Frank August Adolph one brother Julius Bossier and one granddaughter Bernice Ruch Also a daughter in law wife of August and many relatives She was sister of Lydia Henriott Demented note lives at St Bernard Catholic Church Frenchtown Funeral held January 19 at 10 00 A M at St Bernard Church interment in church cemetery On the border land we left her family notes obituary in loving memory
Miss Lina Black hosted about twenty friends for a miscellaneous shower for Mrs. James E. Sturges nee Margaret Lahue. Guests hemmed towels, read a list of do and donts, enjoyed brick cream and cake, and the bride received many presents.
The county received its heaviest rainfall in months last Saturday and Saturday night. Big Indian Creek and other streams overflowed their banks soaking the country. A rainfall shortage had persisted in this region for several months.
The Corydon Presbyterian revival, led by Pastor Rev. Mark L. Kerris and assisted last week by Rev. Henry M. Rogers of Hanover, closed last Sunday night after two weeks. Two accessions joined the church. sermons were earnest and effective, with Mrs. G. Doolittle serving as organist and a faithful choir.
Abraham Thomas of Jackson township died Tuesday night January 16 at his daughter Mrs Charles Bowmans home near Crandall after an illness. He aged eighty four years four months and nine days and was survived by daughter Mrs Bowman and son John whose address is unknown. Burial was at Bethlehem graveyard Thursday afternoon with no service due to widespread illness. funeral to be preached later. He served in the LIst Indiana Infantry. He was regarded as a good man and citizen.
Andrew A. Askren died Tuesday evening January 16 after a weeklong illness from pneumonia at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Kintner. He would have been 28 on January 19. He married Victoria Conrad last October. they survived an automobile accident on their wedding day. Surviving family includes father Charles, two sisters Mrs. Talmadge Schaffer and Mrs. Harry Greene, and brothers Dan, Smith, and John. His mother and a sister died last year. Funeral was held Thursday at Heidelberg with Rev. M C Patterson officiating. burial in the church cemetery. Askren was a World War II veteran who served in France in the Argonne. Harrison Post American Legion conducted rites at the grave.
CHS updates note the Girls Basketball team defeated Louisville High 19 to 17 after a prior win, and the Boys defeated New Albany 19 to 17 at Calumet Gym. Saturday the Girls beat Shepherdsville 11 to 8 with changes at center and guard. Crowd support remains strong despite weather.
County Sheriff John K. Morris has appointed Allen Jordan as Court Bailiff. Allen is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank O. Jordan of this place and a World War veteran who has endured rheumatism for over a year.
President Warren G. Harding has been confined to his room for a week but reports indicate he is improved and capable of resuming official duties. The update follows a period of illness with doctors monitoring his condition at the White House.

Charles F Stevens and Emily Kepley Stevens marked seventy years since their 1853 wedding in Harrison County Indiana eight miles from Corydon. The couple, in their late eighties and early nineties, survived by a foster son Chas N Dome, reflect on a landmark union amid a large pioneer community. Their only children were none, with both parents among eighteen siblings. Stevens fought in the Civil War with Company C List Indiana Volunteers. The celebration echoed with a large supper and stories of a bygone era.
The Ladies Aid of the Corydon M. E. church hosted an oyster supper at Rosenberger's restaurant last Monday evening. The meal included oyster and vegetable soup, salads, and pie. Proceeds were encouraging and will benefit the church.
Mrs Lewis Tracewell returns to her Evansville home after two weeks with her parents Mr and Mrs Henry Davidson on North Market Street. She was summoned by the serious illness of her father.
The Indiana Democratic Editorial Association holds a midwinter meeting February 8 and 9 at the Claypool Hotel in Indianapolis. A banquet February 8 features Senator Samuel M. Ralston and other speakers. John H. Heller presides. editors from Indiana and guests invited.
Mrs. Jack Thompson died Thursday afternoon at her daughter Mrs. Leslie Byerley’s Mauckport home after several years of illness. She was about seventy five and survived by three sons and three daughters including Thomas Thompson and Mrs. Byerley. Also surviving are her husband, a brother John Cain of Brandenburg, and several other relatives. Burial followed in Mauckport cemetery after services led by Rev. Cornwall.
Jacob A. Stevens recently returned to Jeffersonville Indiana after a ten week visit with relatives in Illinois. He writes about fine country sociable people and meeting former Harrison county residents including Bliss Kopp Askren and Haub. He notes dislike of Illinois politics and hopes to see Corydon soon.
Gravel Road bonds totaling 14400 dollars were sold by Posey County Treasurer Wm Taylor to The City Trust Company of Indianapolis for a 411 dollar premium. Eight bidders competed and Indianapolis firm posted the highest bid for the project to build the Jacob Roudenbush gravel road in Posey Township.

Four men robbed Moser Leather Company workers of 1600 dollars placed in pay envelopes at the Silver and East Market streets plant. They fled toward Louisville. two men, Archie Wells and Albert Banks, were captured and jailed for five to fourteen years with fines and disfranchisement. A 70-year-old witness alerted police. other robbers escaped. Additional local crimes reported include home burglaries and a theft from The White House in New Albany.
The Music Memory Contest committee lists items including works by Gounod Rubinstein Beethoven Liszt Schubert Brahms Handel Haydn Mendelssohn Wagner Bach Gounod Rachmaninoff Chopin Massenet Verdi Kreisler Mozart and more and asks patrons to lend records or contribute to the list as they will not furnish records this year. The graded school building and the records will be sent after.
The Interstate Public Service Company board of directors has declared a regular quarterly dividend of 134 percent. It will be paid January 15 to stockholders of record December 31, 1922.
