The Langs school house in Spencer township Yuprfed burned Wednesday evening just after four. Fire started in the attic from a defective flue as students were leaving. Miss Selah Popham of Corydon sounded the alarm. Chester Swarens nearby helped. Most belongings saved. teacher desk and some library books were lost. No injuries reported amid the excitement.
On February 12 the No 5 Harrison township school held a community gala day. Patrons and scholars greeted J. E. Messler, the teacher, who saw the day shift to patrons taking charge of the program. After a shared repast the evening program featured speeches recitations and songs. The event earned Messler high praise as one of the most successful schools at the place.
A Supplemental Farmers Institute will meet at Grange Hall in Lanesville on March 5 and 6. Speakers include Barris of Cloverdale and Burton of Orleans Ind. Topics cover Clover apple growing fences mixed farming corn seed hogs and farm improvements. James A. Harbison is president and J W Lyskowinski is secretary. Full program to run next week.
The Kintner House will change hands tomorrow. Geo W Shuck rents the hotel and will operate it with the livery barn as G W Shuck & Co. Mr Conner will devote full time to telephone work. Shuck is well known to travelers and highly regarded for his geniality with a promising future.
A large barn owned by Anthony Windell near Hill Grove burned last Friday night with all contents including two horses and three cows. Windell suffered severe burns while trying to save belongings. Fire suspected to be incendiary.

An enthusiastic pike meeting was held at the court house last Monday night. Fr. S. Hallett was elected president and F. A. Bullett secretary. An executive committee of five was appointed to report at next Friday night’s meeting. The good roads movement draws much interest.

On February 15 Charlotte Jenkins and her son Thomas Jenkins left the county via the Southern Railroad for Ft. Steel Wyoming. They travel to join John W. Jenkins and seek mining work. Harry Hull accompanies them for mine employment. Isaac Smith of Franklin township, formerly Palmyra, fell on the ice the 11th, dislocating a hip at nearly 75. though serious, he was reportedly improving.
The Democrat announces George A Keller of Harrison township as a candidate for County Surveyor. A 29 year old farmer, Keller is a first time candidate who has supported the party and was runner up for township assessor two years ago.
Breckenridge Indiana seller JS PRERIMMER reports most chickens sold with a few cockerels available at a per head price. Eggs offered at prior rates one dollar per setting from select hens and thirty cents for farm run.
