Auto Plunges Into Farm Pond Drowning Mother And Son
Mrs Barbara Shumaker and her eleven month old son Howard Lee died when her car ran off a road and into a pond near Corydon. Sheriff Kessler led the search after a restaurant operator reported she failed to appear for work. The car was found submerged at the Keith Feller farm. The crash is believed to have occurred on a curve as Mrs Shumaker lost control. Funeral services were set for Corydon E A B Church with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Surviving relatives include her husband Floyd Shumaker, parents, a step son and step daughter, and other relatives.

Five IU students die in North Georgia crash
David Allen Merk 21 of Laconia and four IU students died in a fiery two car crash in northern Georgia last Saturday at about 430 am. The passengers included Stephanie Sowers 20 of Miami Stephen De Maugans 20 of Indianapolis Mark unknown 18 of Lyons NY and Kenneth Heiner 20 of Columbus Ind. Heiner was seriously injured. The other driver a Georgia native died and the car burst into flames as the students attempted to avoid the collision. Merk’s funeral was held at Most Precious Blood Church New Middletown with burial in the church cemetery.
