The state house commissioners ordered two inch cubes of various limestone and sandstone specimens packed and sent to General Q A Gilmore in New York for testing. Names and origins of the stones span quarries in Bedford, Spencer, Ellitteville, Putnamville, North Amherst, and other towns with notes on color and stone type. A few Ohio samples were excluded from testing.
