The Community Services Committee of the APL-CIO Central Labor Unions of Corry in cooperation with the United Fund of Erie County opens a six session union counsellors training course tonight at the Union Hall 26 North Center Street. Initial speakers include William Myers president of the Corry CLU Frank Grate chairman of Erie A Y L CIO CSC and A E Ross labor staff representative of the United Mind of Erie County. Next sessions feature James Hammond Gerald Lane Clifford Taylor Edgar Alexander Miss Emmi Matthews Mrs John Trimble Nevin N Smith Guido DiLoreto George Young Captain Bush and Miss Helen Uhlman. The Corry City Planning Commission opened its fifth year of meetings at Corry Area High School with two new members Erkki Rainesalo and James Narducci.
Adults may return to evening classes this winter at the high school. Courses offered depend on interest and include accounting, typewriting, shorthand, foreign and modern languages, homemaking, shop or hobby courses. Registrations take place next Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 7 30 to 9 pm in the high school office. An initial 35 registration fee applies but is returned if attendance reaches 75 percent or more.
Berlin police fired warning shots as about 600 protesters in Reinickendorf clashed with East German authorities. Demonstrators threw rocks at border lights and the barbed wire barrier while authorities evacuated dozens of families from Bernauerstrasse and reinforced the border with earthworks and trenches in the American sector.
In Butler County two burglary suspects James Koot and Daniel Cox, both 19, allegedly fought over a girlfriend after breaking into Rexford Still Sporting Goods in Spartansburg and stealing guns valued at about 3800. Cox fired over a group’s heads during the confrontation, leading to their arrest in Butler and detentions for pointing a deadly weapon. Police and state troopers uncovered eight more stolen guns at a Kopf farm and will hold the pair for Corry State Police after Butler County case proceedings.
Wright School will add three make-up days after remodeling delayed the start. Superintendent Thomas R. Shupe announced December 4 this year and March 2 and April 4 next year as make-up dates. Other district schools will close for holidays on those days.
Washington AP reports a tempestuous end to a short congressional session. The House passed a $1.121 trillion supplemental appropriation then adjourned at 4:20 am. Senate leaders, furious at the House delay, pushed the bill through by voice vote to avoid a funding impasse for federal agencies. The session capped about $1.0 trillion in wartime appropriations and roughly $4.9 billion for other programs, with leadership trading sharp words as adjournment came.
Soviet Foreign Minister Andrey Gromyko used a General Assembly speech to push disarmament, press for a three man UN board for Berlin, and warn the West against Berlin threats. He asserted East German peace talks and UN roles while signaling potential UN involvement to avert conflict. The speech suggested groundwork for UN mediation though the West questions East German legitimacy and access to Berlin.
United Nations may become involved in Berlin crisis negotiations as the United States and Soviet Union seek a formula to start talks. If talks stall the General Assembly could take up the issue. if negotiations begin the UN might help implement any future plan for West Berlin. Gromyko and Rusk met in New York amid cautious optimism and continued deadlock.
Rosemary Chaney Way disclosed last night to have dropped her role at Friday night's Bell Telephone Hour television show on the NBC network. A spokesman for NW Ayers, advertising agency representing the program, said her decision followed a dispute over a song for the show. Miss Clookey was not available for comment.
The Pennsylvania State Highway Department begins a safety program on West Washington Street Extension Corry to remove hazardous spots. Corry Construction Co. will replace three bridges with steel and concrete spans and realign approaches to allow wider traffic and reduce sharp curves at a total cost about 150000 dollars.
