Supreme Court frees 19 Communist leaders temporarily
Justice Jackson ruled the 19 U.S. Communist party leaders must stay free for now to protect American rights and avoid portraying them as martyrs. He noted jailing them would threaten freedoms while the high court prepares a final ruling on their conspiracy conviction. Government urged denial but Jackson emphasized national embarrassment and the danger of symbolizing an evil force.
