Britain Expels 90 Soviet Officials Over Espionage Probe

London orders the expulsion of 90 Soviet officials with diplomatic passports and bars 15 more from returning after a high ranking Soviet defector exposed KGB spy rings. The move targets embassy staff, Narodny Bank, Intourist, and Aeroflot. it threatens East West ties and may derail plans for a European security conference.

Union City Dam Dedication Ceremony Highlighted

At yesterday's dedication R Budd Dwyer state senator Joseph Vigorito US congressman Forrest Hopkins state representative and Dennis Frushone Corry Area Chamber of Commerce official attended. The $11.7 million project aims to prevent floods in the French Creek valley. Officials from the Army Corps of Engineers in Washington DC said studies are underway to convert the present dam into a permanent reservoir and recreation complex.

Two Injured In Crash On Route 6

Two area men remain hospitalized after a three vehicle crash on Route 6 six miles west of Corry at 8 40 last night. Kenneth H. Shreve 17 of Union City in serious condition at St Vincent Erie after transfer from Corry Memorial. Gilbert Sorenson 23 of Maple Avenue listed in satisfactory condition at Corry Memorial. A truck driver James W Beeman 22 of Union City uninjured. Damage estimates given for the Shreve Sorenson and truck. A separate incident in West Smith street plaza left 6 year old Earl G Stufflebeam hospitalized in satisfactory condition after being struck by a car driven by Mrs Robert M Rowland 32. Police report the boy ran from between cars into the vehicle.

Two Police Suspended In Pittsburgh Shooting Case

In Pittsburgh AP report two city policemen Berry Joyce and Daniel Cuneen were suspended and charged with assault with intent to kill after a 17 year old black youth, John Williams, was shot twice during a high speed chase. Williams, from Northside, is in fair condition at Mercy Hospital. Williams’s brother was shot and killed by a policeman last June.

Funeral Shootout Kills U S Marshal Outside Church

Police say at a Florida church funeral for a prisoner's father a stepbrother drew a gun, triggering a gunfight that left Deputy U S Marshal Norman E B Sheriff dead. The suspect Randolph J. Green and his brother Lavance Green fled in a car, were chased, and captured about two miles away.

Stroke Fatal To Justice Hugo Black

Retired Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black died in his sleep at Bethesda Naval Hospital at 1 a.m. EDT. He was 85, with death attributed to inflammation of the arteries and a stroke. Black had retired Sept. 17 after entering the hospital Aug. 28 for treatment of diseased blood vessels. Former Chief Justice Earl Warren lauded him as a great man and intimate colleague. Black, appointed by FDR, served 34 years on the court, known for strict constitutional interpretation and landmark civil liberties rulings including the 1963 right to counsel applying to the states. He stood for the Bill of Rights as binding on all levels of government. Continued on back page.

First UF Report Set For Tuesday

The Corry United Fund 1971 campaign to raise $91,000 starts with a 7 a.m. breakfast at the Corry Motor Inn on Tuesday. At last week’s kickoff volunteers reported $6,304 in advance pledges and cash, with further meetings set for October 4, 11, and 15. Andy Anderson, general chairman, said all divisions show gains over last year, though the community lost substantial donors, making increased pledges essential to hit the goal, 22 percent higher than last year.
