A massive Quebec blackout lasting over two hours left thousands stranded in elevators and subways as streets saw minor accidents. The outage, blamed on a faulty switch, began at 3 26 yesterday afternoon at a government hydro plant.
Spring Creek taxpayers convene at 7:30 p m at the fire hall to seek explanations for a about 28 percent tax increase this year. Bruce Bailey, township supervisor chair, says Finance Manager Pred Davids will explain district tax growth as residents press for relief and clear information.
Commonwealth Secretary C DeLores Tucker, a leading Black female official, was fired by Gov. Shapp amid a probe into paid speeches and alleged use of staff to write them. The administration cites an Atty Gen report noting extensive paid engagements and a possible misuse of the secretary’s office. Tucker, 49, says she will respond and denies improper conduct while the governor’s office forwards findings to the Dauphin County DA.
CIA official Sidney Gottlieb testified before a Senate subcommittee that members of President Nixon's traveling party were drugged on a 1971 trip to an unfriendly nation. The President reportedly was not affected while his personal physician suffered adverse effects, and Gottlieb cited documentation of foreign agents using drugs on American officials.
Corry seniors increasingly attend the local Senior Citizens Center with two nutrition programs operated by the Greater Erie Community Action Committee. Meals on Wheels homebound recipients have grown from about a dozen five years ago to 40 today, while the center serves nearly 50 meals daily. City sewers are being studied by Kimball Engineers of Ebensburg Pa contracted to insert flow meters and test groundwater. They enter manholes at several locations placing red tipped stakes for drill sites and plan to sink four inch holes six feet deep with perforated pipe.
AP says a state Senate Military Affairs Committee hearings into allegations of improper use of National Guard planes by Harry J. Mier Jr. and Gav. Shapp fundraising may be connected.
