Five bandits held John Paul and his family at their Milton Junction Wisconsin home overnight. They robbed a local bank, escaping with bundles of cash after coercing the family into rooms and threatening with guns. Janet Paul, former University of Wisconsin student, was unable to identify the attackers.
United Press dispatch from Pittsburgh reports 23 men armed with clubs hammers and wrenches arrested near the Allegheny courthouse as election returns are guarded. Charles G. McGovern, who trailed Armstrong in unofficial tallying, threatens charges of fraud against 60 people amid disputed results in 992 districts with McGovern leading by about 2,000 votes overall.

Four known members of the Purple gang are charged by prosecutor Harry Toy with a triple murder committed Wednesday. Police ordered the quartet dead or alive, warning officers the men were armed and likely to shoot it out rather than surrender. The suspects are Ray Bernstein, Harry Fleisher, Irving Milberg, and Harry Keywell, who allegedly killed Joseph Luther, Joseph Lebovitz, and Herman Paul over gang dealings in a North Side apartment.
Akron Ohio September 18. The Akron first dirigible tests its eight motor airship under Goodyear Zeppelin guidance. Commanded by Navy Captain Rosendahl the ship will lift off at 2 p.m. weather permitting for a triangular test run.
New York markets fell sharply with prices down 1 to 12 points and London stocks leading losses. Securities shed 64 million pounds sterling in value amid broad selling thought to be bank and insurer distress. Cotton futures hit new lows since 1904 as grains dropped. German and railroad bonds also declined. Sun Life Assurance plummeted from 950 to 650 bid.
First Baptist church of Corry is represented at the sixty seventh session of the Old Creek Baptist Association opening in Erie at the Delaware Avenue Baptist church. Rev W H Dallman Union City presides. notable speakers include Rev George Carter Greenville Rev T D Edwards pastor of the convention church and Rev Dallman with Rev W M Courson Wesleyville. Wilmington Del September 18 two men a guard and a prisoner were shot today when rioting broke out at the New Castle county work house ten miles from here. Officials said 14 prisoners escaped during the disturbance. The injured were Anthony B Hayden guard and Clarence Cole prisoner, who was recaptured after being wounded in the shoulder by a guard. Cole led the outbreak and was brought to the prison recently from Wilmington serving 18 years for banditry. Authorities charged a prisoner named Sellers with Hayden's shooting. How the prisoners obtained the pistols and weapons remained a mystery.
Olga Ziegler of Park Ridge and George Flanard, both jailed awaiting grand jury action on first degree murder charges in Otto Ziegler’s death. Ziegler pleaded not guilty. four other potential witnesses face $500 bail. Brim Sept 18 Sentencing for Alois Schliger 22 Erie convicted of second homicide in the James Massing slaying, a Wesleyville gas station attendant. Sentencing deferred pending motion for new trial alleging improper jury instruction by Judge A B Rossiter. Massing was shot during a holdup August 22, 1930. Schliger said he believed his revolver was unloaded when entering the station. Jury returned a verdict after two hours deliberation yesterday.
The Corry Public School Home Making Department stands ready to assist relief work by canning fruit or vegetables for the Community Chest or any welfare organization if produce and cans are supplied. Relief agencies should contact Supt. of Schools R. S. Dewey to arrange assistance.
Graf Zeppelin began its second round trip flight to Brazil from Friedrichshafen at 11:59 am today. The airship carried passengers and mail over the South Atlantic to Pernambuco in favorable weather, testing the viability of trans Atlantic airship service without incident.
Federal judge Louis Fitzhenry fined the Fleischman Yeast Company 3000 dollars after it pleaded no contest to an indictment charging conspiracy to violate the national prohibition act. Attorneys for the company plan motions to quash the judgment and seek contendre pleas on admitted facts while denying criminal intent.
Pittsburgh, Sept 18 Officials of the American Bond and Mortgage Company and an officer of the Mayflower Hotel Company Washington were indicted by a federal grand jury. The government alleges a complex mortgage scheme defrauded investors tied to the Mayflower Hotel. Wm J Moore Charles B Moore and others named face arrest warrants set at 10000 each with officials describing the case as a colossal fraud in recent years.
F. J. Weigel of the Weigel Chevrolet Company of Warren will assume ownership of the Inca Chevrolet agency, to be housed at the Clinton street garage. The transaction, concluded with Corry Motor Sales, follows Weigel’s prior management of the Warren outlet and is framed as a continuation of local automobile trade leadership. Indictments were also returned against three Montgomery county officials and an unnamed state policeman in a separate arson and conspiracy case, with trials scheduled for the same term of court.
A well dressed sidewalk bandit slugged a young girl near The Taco in Pittsburgh last midnight. The girl screamed, was knocked to the ground, and was sent home after treatment for bruises. No order to surrender was given.
Moyle and Allen, American aviators, were forced down on an uninhabited island after 34 hours of stormy flight from Sablahiro Beach toward Nome. Weather halted their plane, and a later radio message from the Russian steamer Buriat indicated plans to take off again from Maibo Pingino if conditions improve.
Three employees of Pennsylvania's Department of Property and Supplies were dismissed by Secretary John L. Hanna for intoxication during an official visit to Berwick on September 10. The individuals are P. F. Gallagher of Pittsburgh, deputy secretary in charge of engineering and construction. Regia M. Welsh of Pittsburgh, publicity director. and Kenneth A. Rugh of Bolivar, engineer in charge of district No. 11.
Two men die in a collision between a car and a truck on the Steubenville Pike near Bavington. The victims were Leo Bednarko of Pittsburgh and Charles Hunziker of Pittsburgh. Police say the auto took a skid and struck the truck driven by Doyle Durbin of Steubenville.
Washington Sept 18 Walter S Giffard director of Hoover relief says public and private agencies can cover unemployment relief this winter without federal funds. He spoke at the committee on mobilization of relief resources led by Owen D Young, meeting in Washington.
Lancaster New Hampshire Sept 18 Judge B C Oakes killed himself while under investigation as an alleged drunken driver in an automobile crash near the Sunday night accident site. He had resigned from the New Hampshire Superior Court bench hours earlier.
Six men were burned in a gas explosion at No. 10 Colliery Lehigh Navigation and Coal Coca near Tamaqua Pennsylvania. The badly burned were Harry 41 Tamaqua Steve Rulon Lansford and Mike Paschal from various towns. The other three escaped untimed and were treated on site.
