Strike Hampers Vital Defense Programs at Boeing Plants
Pickets began at Cape Kennedy and spread to Boeing sites nationwide as a nationwide strike by the IAM AW union stalled talks after two marathon sessions. Some 24,000 production workers were affected from Cape to the main plant. A 10-day extension was proposed by mediator William Simkin but rejected by the union. Key disputes include seniority versus performance analysis, promotion and demotion rules, union security, and health coverage for dependents. Boeing offered an 8-cent hourly wage rise annually for three years plus cost-of-living adjustments, aligning with industry practice and projecting pay scales from 2365 to 9385 this year. The AFL-CIO represents about 25,700 production workers.
