Five people were injured in two separate crashes in the Corry area early today. Timothy Bensink, 17, and Kevin Ross, 17, were treated and released after a single vehicle left the Corry-Cutting road, hit trees, and struck lawn ornaments. Shirley Bugbee, 47, allegedly ran a stop sign at Routes 8 and 69, colliding with Lee Williams, 29, who was turning onto 89. Bugbee was admitted to Union City Hospital. Williams and Mark Chase, 25, were treated and released. Damage was extensive to both cars.
In Cincinnati, 42 year old Jesse Coulter of Utica Michigan was found guilty of kidnapping and related charges for a 12 hour occupation at the Salvation Army Catherine Booth Home. He sought a son given up for adoption 20 years earlier, inspired by a dramatic TV show. His former wife Rita Gibran pleaded guilty earlier to two kidnapping counts.
Spring Creek men Ronald E. Stroup and Frederick Winters were charged with disorderly conduct after a disruption at CAHS dance. Stroup, refused entry for drinking, fought with teacher chaperone Robert Lindsey while Winters threatened and cursed at another teacher, Richard Prather. Officers separated the group afterward.
An 81-year-old driver Leo M Schulte plowed into about 100 residents at a Americana Healthcare Center picnic in Indianapolis injuring 21 and killing Virginia Dicks 89 and Nellie Ford 83. Schulte, said to be entering a nursing home Oct 1, was questioned then released and the case forwarded to a grand jury.
Washington reports that files on federal examinations of Bert Lance's Georgia banks were stored in a government official's bathroom safe during his nomination as budget director. The 200 page IRS report, submitted to the Senate committee, notes no conclusions and repeats Lance's confirmation stance.
AP report notes that in summer 1977 topless sunbathing increased on Italian beaches yet Vatican editorials claim nudity mostly reflects the wealthy. City police logged two car crashes with moderate damage and no injuries. At Route 6 and Route 426, Helen Yaratch 60 and Everett Phelps 46 collided after Yaratch waited to turn west while Phelps westbound ran the intersection. A second crash at East South and Mill involved Peter Dubrosky 60 turning left and Christine Weis 16 hitting him. both drivers uninjured.
