Moonshiners routed as three large stills seized near Corry

Federal agents led by Lieutenant Ross raided three moonshine operations in the Erie area. Stills were seized at the farms of Martin LaGava on Uy Street, John Sawetz on Maddum Road, and Albert Lillie on Piccadille Hill. Three arrests were made for manufacturing and possessing liquor. Bail set at $1,500 for Lillie, others awaiting hearings on September 16 before U.S. Commissioner Enoch Eiler. Police described the raids as among the quietest in the city.

Dawes and Pershing Laud Wilson and Baker

In New York the republican leaders Vice President Dawes and General Pershing praised Woodrow Wilson and Newton D Baker at a farewell event aboard the Leviathan officials departing for a convention. Dawes called Wilson a great war president and Baker a devoted wartime secretary. Baker’s present speech credited sacrifices of the men who went to France with bearing fruit.

Lost Memory Victim Fails to Recover in Harrisburg

In Harrisburg on September 10 a 25 year old man identified as William Winkleman, called Thomas by some, remains unable to recognize his wife and two children. He was found near Rutherford yards in Reading and taken to a hospital. Doctors say a gas exposure at a swamp mill and a recent influenza attack may have contributed to his memory loss.

Pershing Sails Aboard Leviathan With Legionnaires

United Press reports the Leviathan sailed from New York with 1610 Legionnaires bound for Paris for the American Legion convention. Pershing, greeted by crowds, walked the gangplank as cheers rang out. The voyage features war songs and a display of patriotism as Dawes and other officials joined in the sendoff aboard the decorated liner.

Sanquist Girl To Stand Trial September 19th

A grand jury in Erie County returned an indictment for murder against Edna Sandartist 41 of this area. She is to be arraigned before Alderman Bassett in Erie for a hearing Friday at 10 AM on an additional charge of attempting to conceal the birth of a child. Authorities had sought her whereabouts after a conference with Erie lawyers. she disappeared before the arraignment. The case has drawn local sympathy and a strong defense team is preparing for the trial set to begin a week from Monday.

Embezzler Bennett Surrenders in San Francisco

San Francisco Sept 10 Jack Bennett alias Jacob Berman surrendered while en route to Los Angeles to face charges of misappropriating more than 60 million dollars from the defunct Julian Petroleum company. He called detectives from a San Francisco hotel and said he was ready, then boarded a night train to Los Angeles for arraignment.

Corry Motor Club Reviews Avenue Improvement Plans

The Corry Motor Club directors met at the city building with strong attendance. C F Brown chaired in J S Wright's absence as discussions covered Calms Avenue improvements and methods for upgrading the highway. Levers on the project were turned over to the city commission to authorize work under way. The meeting also noted local oil matters and the club’s ties to the State federation.
