Shafer Launches Campaign for Pennsylvania Governor
Lt. Gov. Raymond P. Shafer formally launched his gubernatorial bid in Pittsburgh with a 2,000-strong rally at the Syria Mosque. He assailed Milton Shapp as a voice of gloom, pledged to raise education, create jobs, boost welfare, and back equal rights and open housing.

Titan 2 launch delayed after fueling halt for age na pursuit
At 7 48 a m est the Titan 2 launch was halted when engineers determined the mission could not proceed today. Navy Cmdr Conrad and Lt Cmdr Gordon were to launch at 9 25 a m to chase the Age na satellite in the first space rendezvous. Labor leaders from Western Pennsylvania endorsed Shafer, who pledged to veto a right to work bill banning the union shop if passed.

Suspect In Erie Girl Slaying Faces Rape Trial
Hayward L. Preston 38, an escapee from Farview State Hospital, was arrested in Charleston on rape charges in West Virginia. He waived preliminary hearing and was bound over for action by the Wetzel County grand jury. Police say he raped a 16 year-old Wetzel County girl on August 8. Pennsylvania authorities seek him for questioning in the July 19 slaying of Christine Watson of Erie.
