Second Soldier Stripped For Refusing War
James A. Johnson Jr. was convicted by a seven judge general court martial for refusing to go to Vietnam and sentenced to five years at hard labor dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of pay. The panel deliberated 20 minutes before the verdict. Johnson saluted after the sentence and showed surprise when looking at his parents. Civil rights workers and pacifists gasped as the sentence was announced. The court had earlier taken 16 minutes to find him guilty. Johnson, the second of three soldiers charged, faced the sentence with a nervous smile and then marched to the podium.
