The Labor Day weekend traffic death toll rose beyond last year with a National Safety Council forecast of about 450 deaths from 6 pm Friday to midnight. The AP tally for August weekend showed 307 traffic deaths, 15 in shops, 71 non boating drownings, 76 miscellaneous, totaling 468. The 1951 peak was 441 and the last Fourth of July had 327 traffic deaths.
A fire Sunday evening on 74 Liberty Street caused by a cigarette started a blaze that damaged the Lindbero home. Firemen from engines 2 and 3 responded with Emergency 6 after being summoned by Joseph Console. The front porch burned, interior suffered heavy smoke damage, with total losses estimated at about $450 and $160 in fire damage. Twenty volunteers reported to the scene.
J Pred Kinley announced today that after six years as Corry area representative, he purchased half interest in Kinley Insurance Agency and the firm becomes a partnership with Dolan focusing on life health accident coverage and real estate. Dolan moved to Corry six years ago from Mt Jewett and has been Prudential representative here since then. Kinley has run the agency for 16 years and the firm will continue as Kinsey Insurance Agency expanding its insurance field.
Corry and Elgin fire crews joined with the Elgin-Beaverdam Volunteer Fire Company to tackle a spreading grass fire near Wilson Court in Elgin Township. Engine 3 and Emergency 5 responded after 2 45 PM, saving a tractor shed but not the building on the property. The blaze touched a mile of railroad right of way. losses were estimated at 500 dollars for the building and 100 dollars for its contents. The Elgin group also used a new 500 gallon water truck. Residents were urged to report grass fires promptly as the danger remains high.
Corry area and Curry region report a rare Labor Day weekend without fatal auto accidents. State Police logged two minor incidents: William Devine, 33, suffered foot injuries after a collision north of Corry on Route 426 when he lost control. Charles Huffman, 65, and Donald Smith, 23, collided on Route 6 near Columbus with no injuries, Huffman cited for left turning into oncoming traffic.
An auto lost a sharp curve in Freeport, Armstrong County, and slammed into two houses. The driver and two residents of one home were injured. The car scraped a cement wall about 200 feet, hit a porch owned by Frank Shearer, then struck a front bay window. Miss Lena Rizzo and Miss Margaret Rizzo, watching TV, were exposed to flying glass and debris and treated by a physician.
Clarence W. Cole, 56, of Wayne Street, died after a ladder rung failed while he painted a home roof about 20 feet above ground. He died of a fractured neck shortly after arrival at Corry Memorial Hospital. Deputy Coroner ruled accidental death. Survived by wife Lela and eight grandchildren, plus eight children and several siblings. Funeral at Bracken Funeral Home led by Rev. H. Ray Harris. interment Pine Grove Cemetery.
The Chamber of Commerce plans to invite Premier Khrushchev to Washington to visit the Soviet leader at the Soviet embassy. A letter dated September 2 1959 from Mr Kearns notes agreement between the United States and Soviet governments on Khrushchev itinerary following President Eisenhower's invitation.
TTUSVILLE employees of Universal Cyclops Steel resumed work after an eight week stoppage. Cold roll mill yard storage and transportation departments started at 11 pm with other departments at 7 pm. Employers will notify workers of schedules. Two thousand eight hundred employees across COTHARY.S Miants Arphitasyle and Bridgeville vote today to ratify a contract extension through 20 days after nationwide steel strike settlement.
An unidentified taxi driver recounted a chase on Third Avenue as 17 year old Ramiro Roman from Puerto Rico was arrested after a man, Thomas Jordan, was fatally stabbed with a knife following an attack that involved thrown concrete. Police linked the incident to a broader youth violence crackdown spurred by a wave of juvenile delinquents in the city.
The United Nations Security Council rejected a Soviet veto and established a four nation subcommittee including Argentina Italy Japan and Tunisia to investigate Laos charges of Communist aggression. Britain France and the United States sponsored the measure as an emergency session neared its end. Koto Matsudaira of Japan called the move a UN presence to ease tension while Henry Cabot Lodge urged rapid fact finding.
In Little Rock Arkansas three bombings disrupt the city causing fear and police cordons around four public high schools. Fire Chief Gann Nally’s wagon was blown up while a second blast hit the school board building. Police, aided by federal troops earlier, intensify patrols as officials urge families to seek safety.
In Jamestown two deputy sheriffs were shot at by Carl Davis 40 as he fired on officers after threatening to fetch two policemen to confront him. Davis was critically wounded. deputies Miles Wilcox and John Bentley returned fire. Davis and his wife have five children.

Washington AP Democratic and Republican leaders reach a toned down housing bill acceptable to President Eisenhower after veto threats and earlier rejections. Senate action may still stall on the public works measure as Morse slows progress and the farm surplus plan faces amendments and a revived food stamp provision.
Corry native Mrs Mahle who died August 11 at age 7 was survived by a probate showing an estate over 10 000 in personal property left to local and distant parties. The will provides 1000 to Salvation Army Corry St Barnabas Home North East Ralph Cady Harrieburg Jeraine Davis Cora Crapser Daisy Hoy deceased Charles Bracken all Corry Emanuel Episcopal Church Corry George Jamison Morris Town NJ a cousin. Eva Patton Corry receives 500 and the remainder to LeRoy Cudy and wife of East South street Corry.
