Coast Guard units launched an intensive surface and air search on Lake Erie for three Ohio men believed drowned after a camping trip. A fourth man’s body was recovered off Millcreek yesterday afternoon. Terrill Grammer, 28, of Akron falls, was identified by his brothers at a hospital.
Secretary of Defense Neil McElroy says the United States and its allies hold a lead in overall military strength over the Soviet Union. He warns against increased long range missile spending and stresses the gap must stay closed. President Eisenhower’s message emphasizes victory in peace through sacrifice. Bernard Baruch is awarded the Legion Distinguished Service Medal in his absence. Preston Moore appears poised for national commander role.
Corry area public schools opened with about 2601 pupils expected to rise in coming days as attendance officers work. AP reports a rotary lawn mower struck a 4 year old boy, Timothy Forkins, in St Charley Township near Chicago. A copper wire hidden in the grass pierced his forehead causing fatal loss of blood and brain injury. The father Russell Forkins was nearby as the accident occurred on a Monday.
