Associated Press reports the Labor Day holiday weekend traffic toll neared 420 as the 78 hour period ended with a rise in highway fatalities. Estimates place total deaths just below the 1957 Labor Day peak, with 30 million cars on the roads and drownings plus other accidents bringing total fatalities to near 1,140 across major summer holidays.
Corry suffered minor damage from a fierce wind rain and thunder storm that hit northern Pennsylvania and southern New York. Deaths were reported in Buffalo and Kane. A large tree limb fell on William Street temporarily blocking traffic and was removed by street crews. Diamond reported the first probable snowfall of the season. Temperatures ranged from 54 to 77 degrees with 0.85 inch of rain from the storm.
A 2-year old skin diver near Staten Island tangled in a harpoon line after a six foot shark pulled him. He surfaced exhausted but alive, revived with oxygen by nearby boaters William Gaylord and his son. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The Associated Press reports at least 27 lives lost in Pennsylvania during the three day Labor Day weekend. Seventeen died on highways including one on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Drownings occurred, four people died in a plane crash, one man was struck by lightning, and a stock car driver perished at a county fair. Notable fatalities include Mrs Lulu Stallman 88 Elmhurst NY in a Turnpike collision and Albert Shaffer 38 Mount Joy burned in a head on crash with his son Glen 8 seriously burned. Additional deaths involved Joseph Grolier and Joseph Domitsovits of Northampton in a spinout near home, Harold House 32 Port Royal, and William and Mrs Omin of Philadelphia drowned in the Delaware River near Matamoras. Other victims include James Mildenberger 18 Erie and Theresa Striver 9 West Mifflin. (Continued on Page Three).

Kenneth Elmer Hale of Cambridge Springs died early Sunday at Meadville Spencer Hospital from chest injuries after a two car crash on Route 19, five miles south of Waterford. Nine others were injured, none seriously. Hale, 36, an equipment operator for the Department of Highways, died at 3 30 a m. Coroner Dr Sherman L Watson ruled accidental death. Others treated or admitted included Hale’s widow Ernestine with burns and possible back injuries, Robert Shorts with a severe laceration, Marie Black with facial injuries, Linda Rodgers, 9, with a suspected elbow fracture, and Charles Rodgers, 1. Del mar James Dye 29 of Warren died when his car struck a northbound freight train three miles north of Kinzua. Dye, a vocalist and guitarist, had been in Limestone area and Bradford over the weekend. He lived in Warren five years and performed with Ron Wandering as Ron and Dell. Funeral services will be in Brocton. Surviving brothers Leonard Dye Jamestown and Louis Dye North East. sisters Mrs Howard Cobb and Mrs Gladys Miller North East.
Nationalists claim 11 Communist torpedo boats sunk and possibly a 12th while breaking a convoy to Quemoy. Navy battles accompany shore bombardment as 857 shells strike the islands in 90 minutes. A transport with 470 troops could not unload fully, highlighting a tense naval phase of the Quemoy crisis.
A Military Air Transport Service plane with 19 aboard crashed west of Guam while on the final leg from Travis Air Force Base California to Clark Philippines. Debris and three bodies recovered. two more bodies found, one by an Air Force helicopter. Crew of seven, 12 passengers and cargo aboard. Major John Walker reported the loss occurred about five minutes after departure at 5:55 p.m. local time. Search continued with Navy and Air Force units assisting.
Postponement of the opening of Central High School in Little Rock eased tensions on the integration stage. The Little Rock School Board voted 5-1 for delay, while Gov. Faubus warned of school closings if needed. Nationwide actions across Virginia Mississippi North Carolina and Oklahoma City followed with legal maneuvers and protests as courts weigh school desegregation.
Students and staff face staggered reopenings as Corry area schools plan to resume classes tomorrow while St. Edward's delays persist. The district cites ongoing repairs and weather impacts. Motorists are urged to drive carefully in city and rural areas during the transition.
Hurricane Ella tracked toward western Cuba and the Florida Straits, about 60 miles southeast of Key West. Forecasters warned of flash flooding in central and western Cuba as Ella extended gusts outward and moved west-northwest at 16 mph. Gale warnings extended to Palm Beach and the Florida Keys, while rebel activity in eastern Cuba was noted in reports.
Corry and Erie Civil Defense will stage an emergency test Friday with observers including a public group, Boy Scouts, and National Guards. Clifford Holwumb, executive director of the Corry group, said the drill aims to closely simulate a real disaster and test every detail without public disclosure.
Carl Whitman of 16 East Mont Street faced Judge Samuel Rowiler in Evie County Court this morning. Whitman, arrested August 4 during a chaotic street confrontation that left two police officers assaulted, received a 190 dollar fine and one year probation after a disturbance and obstructing an officer during an arrest. He has a prior record of eight arrests for assault and related offenses.
State Police and volunteers searched the Lindsey Hollow area south of Corry after a late Sunday report of a downed aircraft. Observers and pilots scoured the landscape but saw no wreckage as overcast weather hindered visibility. A separate report near Kingud Dam also proved to be a hoax after authorities conducted a full search with no signs of a crash.
Rev H R Harris pastor of the Corry Evangelical United Brethren Church for 26 years was reappointed at the 105th Erie Conference session held at Camp Findley Findley Lake by Bishop J Gordon Howard. Two ministerial sons of the Corry church were licensed to preach as probationers. The conference noted fewest pastorate changes in its history.
