United Press reports rebel air attacks on Iran ignite fires and kill unknown numbers while loyalist outposts fight back with machine guns amid heavy bombardment. In Basque areas loyalist forces evacuate key towns as rebel raids widen. Malaga and Burgos endure air strikes with ships nearby.
A chaotic report details injuries from a highway crash near Union City involving a nine year old boy Frank Drabina and several adults. The car driven by Charles Gibson swerved to avoid crossing children, struck the boy, left the road, hit a culvert, and snapped a telephone pole, injuring Mrs Edith Krebbell and Mrs George North among others.
In Fulton Missouri a coal mine disaster claimed the lives of Louis Metz 22 and three of his brothers Ernest 23 Freddie 21 and Harry 19. They died while attempting to rescue Louis who died from monoxide gas. TJ Wolfe a father-in-law of Louis remained in critical condition from gas poisoning at Calaway Hospital.
New York reports cash payments by Standard Oil group for the third quarter 1936 estimated at 28,011,506 dollars, up from 17,653,16 in 1935, a 60.5 percent rise. First nine months total projected at about 124,861,14 dollars versus 88,597,551 in 1935, a 41.3 percent gain.
Washington Sept 1 The Spanish government promised a rigid investigation into the bombing of the U S destroyer Kane by a Spanish airplane. Spain, replying to a protest from the United States, formed the foreign office to handle the matter and pledged prompt inquiry and report of results to Secretary Cordell Hull.
The Board of Education will open bids on September 23 for materials needed to remodel the old Hatch building into a Vorational School. Architect Karley Morrison outlined plans and will supervise construction after consultation with the board. Additional motions included a window replacement at Mrs. Florence Tillotson’s home and WPA-related sidewalk work in progress on Congress and Wright streets.
A tropical disturbance of hurricane intensity was centered about 600 miles southeast of Bermuda at 7 a.m. advisory. The storm, with hurricane-force winds near the center, was moving northwest toward Bermuda at roughly 17 miles per hour, according to the federal hurricane warning system.
Sheriff G Chaniler organized a fresh posse from Yreka at dawn in a second large search for John and Court Bright. Authorities believe the accused triple players are within a short distance of the Horse Creek camp where they reportedly shot and killed two peace officers and a civilian.

In Carbon Hill Alabama on September 1 the body of Marcus Stoddard a coal miner his wife and two children were found in their home all victims of a likely triple murder and possible arson suicide as investigators probe the scene and motive remains unclear.
President Franklin D Roosevelt with cabinet members arrives in Salt Lake City to honor the late Secretary of War George BeDaw. The body is transported from the Union Pacific station to the state capitol and will lie in state before a funeral service at the Mormon Tabernacle.
Earl Nelson a 16 year old six foot four inch schoolboy killed himself fearing taunts over his height. He asked to be buried beside his father but relatives cannot honor the request. He will be buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery tomorrow afternoon.
Harrisburg reports eleven bids covering the full 45 million dollar issue of tax anticipation notes for unemployment relief in Pennsylvania. Banks and securities houses submitted offers as fiscal officers opened bids for the sale of the notes.
Ponca City report notes Oklahoma will pursue another step to secure Carlton Chilton’s extradition. Governor Marland comments express surprise at Ohio’s governor’s ruling but offers no criticism. The delay extends the legal process in the cross state case.

A mass poisoning possibility explored after two women and two men connected to the same home died or fell ill. Arsenic detected in the stomachs of Mrs. Katie Fultz and Mrs. Ruth Dillon. Four alleged members of a counterfeit ring were held for questioning by government secret service men in Pittsburgh. They were arrested after tavern owner Tommy O Connor accused them of passing a counterfeit ten dollar bill, with more bogus notes found in the area.
Moscow reports 900000 recruits ordered into service to raise total armed force strength to 1.6 million. The seasonal draft includes the entire 144 men born that year, as part of routine reinforcement.
Senator Gerald P. Nye of North Dakota will support President Roosevelt and campaign for him. Authorities in New York report Nye plans a tour later in the campaign and will likely appear at Oak ND during the event windows.
Garry Bennett has been reengaged as director of the Corry High School band for the coming year. His salary remains the same as last year. Early expectations that Donald Glossner could take over band duties were dashed by his full time Commercial course teaching schedule. Bennett’s selection followed a recommendation from Supt. R. E. Dewey.
