Erie Railroad pays Pennsylvania to cross the state since 1846
General Edward Martin unearthed that the New York and Erie Railroad Company now Erie Railroad pays $10,000 annually to Pennsylvania for the right to cross the northeastern corner of the state. Since 1846 the payments, totaling over $500,000, are due each January under the act of March 26, 1846. From 1900 the funds were prorated between Pike and Susquehanna counties.
