Secretary of State Dulles refused new talks with Russia on West Germany while praising West Germany's NATO alignment. He met with Eisenhower and the National Security Council to review Asian threats and promote allied strength. Britain and France reportedly back his stance against Russia’s bid for new conferences.
The Warren County Civil Defense held an evacuee drill with nearly 100 people and 20 cars. Volunteers gathered at the Court House Annex in Warren and were routed to Columbus North Warren Tidbute Sheffield Kines and Fur Sell for assignment to food shelter and medical care. Names of participants in Columbus include Mrs DaPorter Bindiey Mrs Robart Jowell Mrs Herbert Duhi Mrs Warlo Morris Mrs James Roden Mra Jordan Christensen and Mra Den Taggart.
Flooding and landslides swept along the Salerno to Amalfi coast with reported deaths and missing persons. In Salerno area 68 bodies counted. 39 in serious condition. up to 100 missing. Amalfi coast reports include 15 bodies. towns like Majori, Cava del Tirreno hit hard. Communications broken, rail bridge collapsed near Ponte del Rodolo. Italy’s Interior Ministry warned tolls may rise to India higher than earlier counts. 500 homeless reported in the stricken area.
Cars driven by William C. Yaratch and Mrs. Schurman collided at an unmarked intersection north of Corry. Each vehicle sustained about $150 damage. both drivers escaped injury. In New York, 17-year-old Thomas Wyts Kowal was sentenced to 10 to 20 years for first degree manslaughter in a July killing.
