Washington County Judge Charles G. Sweet denied a defense motion to delay the first trial in the Yablonski murder case set for November 1. Attorney Mark Goldberg sought a 120 day continuance for Aubran Wayne Martin among five defendants charged in the December 31, 1969 killings of Joseph Yablonski, his wife and daughter. The five defendants include Paul Gilly and his wife Annette with her father Silous Huddieston. Claude Wedley has pleaded guilty. All are jailed under tight security. Martin’s trial date was moved from October 18 to November 1 for convenience.
State Police from the Corry substation investigated two crashes that left two people hospitalized and caused thousands in damage. Mrs. Harald Armitage and Mrs. Bessie Cline were treated at Erie Osteopathic Hospital in fair condition. In Waterford a three-vehicle collision at a traffic signal involved Donald Korrell and Richard Galbraith. damages totaled $1,525 with Galbraith's car at $500 Armitage's $1,000 and Korrell's $25. The second crash, nine miles south of Corry on Oil Creek Road, involved Robert Eastman whose car left the road, struck a bridge railing and was demolished. Eastman was injured but did not seek treatment.
Governor Shapp’s potential signing of a bill would raise Erie County official salaries by about 31 percent, total annual pay rising from 166,400 to 218,360. The measure, passed by large majorities, ends the fee system for elected offices and shifts to direct county payments, applying only to officials up for election.
