Beckley West Virginia October 23 state mine officials opened an inquiry into a deadly blast at the McAlpin Coal Company mine near Mec Alpin. The explosion followed suspected dynamite firing by a miner. Six men were killed and several others exposed to gas. 248 workers were employed at the mine and about 60 were nearby when the blast occurred. Bodies identified include B. B. Burkhold T. Durham Richard Durham Laurence Reese John Herriston and Alfred Davis.
Eighteen cases of mumps are still under quarantine in the city, Health Officer Tipton reports receiving notices of about two additional cases daily. Quarantine is listed on the cases as rapidly as new ones are reported. One case of diphtheria and one case of scarlet fever are also under quarantine here.

McInnes and Doris Bacon as chairladies for mid November activities.
