Opposition to bond issue cited by Erie Motorists group

A prominent Corry Motor Club member objects to a proposed 50 million dollar state road bond issue arguing it would require raising the gasoline tax toward four cents per gallon. He warns the extra debt would boost annual interest costs to about 10 million, equating to funding two hundred miles of highway at current rates, and predicts a three to five cent per gallon total tax if the plan proceeds. He cites the highway department’s estimates and possible legislative actions while warning of higher maintenance costs and broader road mileage expansion. The piece also notes a public sale listing furniture and household items to be auctioned by Mrs Fay Stearns on East Washington Street, with auctioneer Joey Hammond.
