Harrisburg reports native sprouts four to five inches in diameter are bearing chestnuts in parts of the state despite the blight. W B Montgomery, chief of the Bureau of Management, notes that no sprout shows immunity. Asiatic varieties resist differently but lack timber form and fruit quality. Chestnut blight arrived via imported nursery stock before 1890 and was seen in New York in 1904.
