Corry firemen fought two separate fires in four hours. At 12680 p m they tackled a blaze at the Planter of the Corry Jamestown Corp. spray room where sprinklers activated but could not fully contain the fire. Engines two and three, Truck four and an emergency unit operated with 28 men, returning by 1 05 p m. The second fire occurred at a two family home on West Pleasant street, advised by James Leslie of Waltaburg. no injuries were reported.
Five firemen and two hotel guests suffered minor injuries when a Saturday fire swept the top floors of the Fort Ligonier Hotel. A guest, Thomas Alderice, 75, of New Jersey, died of a heart attack outside. Firemen said the blaze started in the kitchen and surged up a wall. other floors were harmed by smoke and water. Cause and damage estimates remained unavailable.
Harry Walker was named field manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates to replace Danny Murtaugh who stepped down for health reasons. Walker, 45, previously played in the majors for the Cardinals Phillies Cubs and Reds and was announced by General Manager Joe Brown after talks during the World Series.
