Mental Patients Dumped in Welfare Hotels Says Doctor

Philadelphia psychiatrist Dr. Israel Zwerling warned at a conference that tens of thousands of mental patients are housed in urban welfare hotels and boarding houses due to underfunded community housing. He cited a sharp hospital population drop from 858,422 in 1955 to under 200,000 in 1976 and warned of high rehospitalization and unemployment rates amid inadequate care in these settings. He noted 25,000 ex patients in New York City SRO hotels and about 11,000 more in Los Angeles living with little oversight or meals.

Grice Briefs City on State Capitol Visit and Plans

Franklin School Fire Blamed On Arson

In Franklin Pennsylvania authorities say two weekend fires caused about $500000 in damage and were arson. Empty gasoline cans and gasoline soaked books were found near the high school library, which was under an expansion and scheduled for completion. One firefighter was slightly injured.

Baby Delivered By Dad Grandad In Bear Lake Home

David Ross and his father in law Robert Burch helped deliver a baby girl to Patricia Ross at about 1130 Saturday night in their Bear Lake home. Grandfather Burch, an EMT, then drove the ambulance to Union City Memorial Hospital after mother Muriel Darlene and baby were taken by Bear Lake Fire Department. Both mother and baby are reported doing fine this morning.

Corry Man Hurt In Shop Accident

Walter Szarzanowicz of 1358 West Pleasant Street was admitted to Corry Memorial Hospital at 9 50 AM after a block toppled and struck his leg while unloading six small blocks of steel billet at McInnes Steel Co. He is listed in satisfactory condition. Szarzanowicz works as a hookup man at Melanes and was under the supervision of personnel manager Charles Catania.

Cave Rescue Freezes Relief Over Maryland Cavern

Rescue workers pulled James Wright Jr. a 19 year old geology student from Frostburg State College from Twiga's Cave in Cumberland Maryland after he was trapped 37 hours 1000 feet below ground. He was escorted to an ambulance after the perilous extraction yesterday.

Corry Police Arrest Two Men In Minor Corruption Cases

Two Corry men faced charges of corruption of minors and related offenses after weekend police action. George W. Madison 32 of 718 Grand Street and Roger L. Petty 22 of 326 West Pleasant were arrested following alleged encounters with a minor and concealment of a missing girl. Madison posted 500 dollar bond after arraignment. Petty also was released on 500 dollar bond after his arraignment. Additional weekend arrests included Melvin C. Wickstrom 61 of Panama for public intoxication and Eliot V. Anderson 22 of Warren on reckless driving and studded tires. A theft investigation at Une Lawson's store involved LaVerne Skinner with ether product loss of 4.85 dollars. Police continue the investigation.

Trooper Gambino Case Under Investigation in Meadville

Crawford County district attorney Douglas Ferguson will decide charges in the fatal crash involving Trooper Richard Gambino, 96, of Columbus on duty. Cecil R. Harrison Jr died. Gambino remains under treatment on limited duty as investigators review events 20 minutes before the collision near Canadohta Lake.

Marine Bank Assets Top $300 Million in 1977 Quarter

Marine Bank reported assets surpassing 300 million for the first time in the third quarter, a near 10 percent rise from 1976. Chairman Charles H Brackett said earnings for the quarter jumped 42 percent to 86 cents a share, with nine month earnings up 49 percent to 1.79. Demand and time deposits rose to a record 276 million, enabling higher loan volumes to 185 million, up from 155 million a year earlier. Brackett said rising credit demand and modestly higher short term rates are likely through year end, signaling continued record growth.
