MEADVILLE An aroused black bear was killed with a shotgun after mauling three people at Conneaut Lake Park Fairyland Forest near Meadville. Attendant John Hohl 45 of Conneaut Lake and 12 year old Robert Mahoney were injured, a McKees Rocks woman and park zoo attendant also harmed. The bear grabbed Mahoney’s arm and turned on Hohl who tried to shield the boy. Hohl’s son, 15, fought the bear with a wood, then both were helped to a shed. The incident led to the bear being shot after it attacked Kemp of McKees Rocks. The woman was injured, remains under care. Continued on Page Two.
Russell E. Bemis 24 faced three counts after a September 6 car incident on Sciota Street. David Ross admitted two charges of operating without license and without sticker. Bemis kept one count for driving too fast for conditions. Witness accounts differed, Alderman Auer dismissed two Bemis charges and pressed Ross for the remaining offense.
Archbishop John J. Mitty, 77, longtime head of San Francisco's Roman Catholic archdiocese, died yesterday in the city. His leadership spanned several decades guiding parish communities and regional church affairs.

A fire near Buccus Corners east of the village destroyed the Ronald M. Shank residence and most contents. Overheated wiring started the blaze, Columbus Fire Chief Hollis Apperman said.
