Pinchot ally shifts to Democrats amid Reed-Schnader split

In Harrisburg on October 16 an ally of Gifford Pinchot, Eber Cockley, announced his move to the Democratic camp. The longtime Progressive and Republican friend criticized Reed and Mellon, urging progressives and independents to back Pinchot and Schnader's slate, warning of concentrated wealth and tax-exempt securities shaping state power. The letter, read by Rep Norbert J. Fitzgerald, cites tax burdens on homeowners and estate-like benefits to wealthy investors, framing the shift as a response to privileged influence in Harrisburg and Washington.

Police court liquor fines ruled illegal in Pittsburgh

Hundreds of appeals loom after a Common Pleas Court en banc decision holding police magistrates powerless to fine for liquor law violations. The court found fines by police courts for keeping a disorderly house invalid, as only aldermen or criminal court trials may impose such penalties. The ruling affects cases like John Phillips of 2804 Carson Street, who faced a $50 police court fine and a $25 alderman’s state liquor charge.
