Ex Mental Patient Threat to LBJ Sought in Corpus Christi
Sheriff Mitchell disclosed an informant alleged a former mental patient planned to shoot President Johnson and sought an automatic weapon from Julius Schmidt of Corpus Christi. Two men, Schmidt and Jerry Bird of Culallen Texas, faced $5,000 bonds after police found two machine guns at Schmidt’s home. No evidence tied Bird to a plot and authorities questioned Schmidt’s awareness of any assassination plan.

Meadville Paper Endorses Johnson in Historic Presidential Favor
The Meadville Tribute endorsed Lyndon Johnson for president, marking the first presidential endorsement by the 1984-founded independent Republican daily. It praised Johnson’s experience and temperament and cited welfare and world peace as reasons for returning him to the White House. The paper, owned by Robert S. and Edward J. Bates, also backed Republicans for Congress and the State Legislature.
